Mossberg shotguns, are they any good?

I have a 500, 835, & Mav88. They're nothing fancy but they all work good. No issues with any of them. They seem well worth the money they cost.

A friend of mine purchased a new 535 last year, and it drops shells out of the magazine when pumped. He shoots, pumps, the 2nd shell falls to the ground, and the third shell goes into the chamber.

It seems to be a fairly common problem amongst them.

Make no mistake, a Mossberg shotgun is a work-horse. It's a simple, no-nonsense, utterly reliable machine. It's not pretty; it's meant to be reliable and work when you need it, no matter what the conditions are. No pretty expensive wood stocks here, just a well-priced dependable shotgun.

How is it that you know this to be a common problem? Interestingly enough, my first 870 would do something similar - I would pump it, the chamber would be empty, but there would be a live round on the ground.

I have a 535 and an 870 express. I prefer the moss. Something about the safety and action/slide release on the moss just makes sense to me, seems more natural than the rem. I have shot bird/buck/slugs in 2.75 to 3.5" and never had an issue shoots cheap walmart win and fed ammo just as good as premium priced stuff.

I have a Winchester 2200 that have done this from time to time.

My brother just bought a Mossberg 500 from Epps the camo three barrel set, and he loves it, its a little light for anything above a 12 gauge 3" though. Its nice, i dont mind it either, iw ill say though that the camo dip is quite thick, when the smith mounted his scope on the deer barrel, he had to bend the mount open a little to accept the rail. But that scope will never come off!!! skokie

May not be current....My brother bought a Maverick (Can-tire) about 4 months after my 500. It was almost half the price. The only differences (I recall) were:
Black synthetic on the Maveric vs. my "real" wood
His had only one "action bar" (slide? Mine had one on each side whereas his had only one)
His safety was on the trigger group, mine was a tang (and, n'er worked quite right!)

For half price, he got 85% the same gun. Things may have changed...this was all 25 years ago

I guess they are like anything good and bad but when thet break can be fun getting parts ,my cousin broke the reciever Yes busted it ,Mossberg fixed it ,2 years later,as for 870 express had one once traded it for a fishing reel think I got the better of that one but do like 870's earlier ones:cool:

The only difference now is the maverick has 2 action bars and changeable chokes.

I've put probably a few thousand rounds through mine, never had a problem. Service support is pretty decent too...only takes a few days from the states and almost never costs any money.

My 870 slug gun did that to me while deer hunting last year, after first shot it ejected empty shell and second slug. My followup shot was just a click and had to pump the third round in.
