Hello to all,

I am seriously considering CAS next season! But this winter I would like to start with Fast Draw....
After a long reaserch I found out that there is only ONE fast draw shooter in the whole Eastern Canada!(at least he is the fastest;)).

I would like to hear from Eastern Cowboy shooters their opinions, ideas, etc. about that Cowboy activity.
Anybody has ever thought about it? Would you like to try it?

Thank you all,:)

OK

Fast Draw, is generally frowned upon by SASS shooters east of Alberta I think. There is very little fast draw in Canada. Some like I say in Alberta as far as I know.

I think if you really want to do Cowboy Action Shooting, you should join SASS (the governing body for the World), read the rules and get out and have some fun.

If you are in Ontario, there is a site that shows all the clubs that have regular matches.

Thank you Tuco,
I didn't answer before because I'm waiting for some infos about the numbers of FD shooters in W. Canada.
But I can tell you that on a competition (last year) 4 provinces were represented! (BC, Alberta, SASK, and Quebec!

Thanks again!

Here is some info www.cascanada.com. There is now a fast draw that is called Cowboy Fast draw which now uses traditional cowboy guns, not special fast draw modified, not much in the SASS world, most of us have enough trouble just hitting what we need to in the cowboy shoots fast enough. Look at the clubs, go and look at a match and talk to people, sadly the seasn is drwoing to a close.

Yes, you are right Cowboy fast draw (thumbing) is what I plan to start with, as you don't need a modified and more expensive gun (fanning). ( older 3 screws Ruger)

Thank you for your input!

Are we talking the same thing here? In SASS cowboy action shooting, you can thumb any gun, I assume you mean to hold the trigger while working the action with your thumb, similar to slam firing a shotgun.

In no SASS discipline or at any club in Canada I would imagine would any of them allow fanning. The using of the edge of your hand to pull back and release the hammer. a) doing this un-aimed at waste level is dangerous for having errant rounds going out of the range, b) doing it at eye/aimed level would prove cumbersome.

Fast draw, used to be done with wax bullets that had a range of like 15 to 20 feet, or just the hot powder to pop balloons (akin to mounted SASS). Perhaps I am completely out to lunch on this subject.

Yes fast draw is practiced in Alberta and B.C. (Langley)....depending on the Association you join you may shoot thumbing, one hand only or fanning, cocking with the weak hand.(as you described) Yes it is from waist level...any higher wouldn't be fast draw...

While it is the fastest "sport", it is also the safest, because it is ONLY done with wax bullets (or black powder for balloons). Speed is not the only thing because you also have to shoot on a target to stop the timer (18-21 ft.)....so speed without precision is useless!

I know that shooters from the East think that FD is a Western thing done by only a few Western-Farmers-Ranchers Canadians but I remember years ago when it was said the same thing about Cowboy Action Shooting....it's a thing that you'll never see overhere...I was told!
Now we have CAS in Ontario, Quebec (I'm still amazed), N.B., P.E.I.....

Thanks:)

Well, I would certainly have interest to see some of this in person. Are you aware of any place in southern Ontario that does this?

Unfortunately like I said on the first post, there's only one Fast draw shooter in Eastern Canada. It's up to the CAS shooters to ask their clubs... What I really like about FD is that you can practice all winter long in your house, when you start to master the draw you add a shot timer and then a lazer to see where you hit on your target. No noise, no primers, no smell....
It would be great to have a few CAS shooters from Eastern provinces getting into Fast Draw.;)

Please send me a PM IN DETAIL exactly what this is, and if there is a governing body to it that I can read about and I will present it to my group to see if they have interest in attempting it on a one off basis for starters. BUT, like I said it is completely going against the grain of SASS, but that doesn't mean that it can't be looked at too.
