Tried to google what exactly I have here and came up empty

It looks to be a mix of the 1980's jackets and the old battle dress wool jackets, Its got a internal pocket, and its sized like the old uniforms but its made from a nylon material, its got a intregral hood and buttons for a liner, the wrist tabs are cotton. Its got one or two repairs to the material as well.

'dry clean only' - not very smart in an operational theatre.

This was VERY common when organic fabrics were the only ones available. Even our last generation fleeces (just before the OD ones) said dry clean only because of the fact they were made of wool! This is only back in the 1980s!

- We had fleece in the 80s? Never saw it.

Not fleece. He's talking about the old wool shirts. I loved those things much more than the fleece that replaced it. I washed mine all the time with no problem.
