I was at the range with m C Sharp on the weekend. Tried a few different loads, liked 37gr 5744. About 2 in., as good as I can shoot with open sights & old eyes. The 550 gr bullet kicked some. I am going to load some 4350 to see how that workes. Something fun about dropping in those cigar sized shells. Any other loads I should try? What do you guys use? Thanks AJ

Personally I'd fill the case with Goex Fg. It's a lot more fun than that smokeless stuff :D.

I would be inclined to think that any 4350 powder might be too slow burning.
Better choices might be IMR 3031, Varget, H322, etc., almost any smokeless powder suited for the 45-70 should work ok.
I know you do not want to use BP but that would be my choice, I would not consider using anything else in my Shiloh... :)
 
Is this chambering the 50-90 Sharps (.50-2 1/2") or the Win. 50-110? C. Sharps call the 50-90 the 50-100 because it will hold at least that much powder or is it the Win. chambering for the 1886 Levergun? I didn't know that C. Sharps offered this latter chambering, and if so, what advantage is it?
 
Loaded up some with 4350 & went to the range. They shot well. I think this might be my hunting load. I did not take my crony out. It should be about 1500fps. I will need to get some more bullets lubed up.Ben sorry for the brain fart it is a Shiloh Sharps 2 @1/2. Old reliable.
 
For hunting, I'm using a LBT 540gr. WFN pb cast 30-1 and 105grs. of Swiss 1 1/2Fg Black Powder, this or the Lyman 515 grain, will shoot 1" at 100 with std. barrel sights if I do everything right(which doesn't happen alot). This 50/90 and load gets my vote as the most effective caliber on big game as you can hear the smack of the big slug, followed by the thud of a big animal hitting the dirt.

Is Swiss 1 1/2 available in Canada and if so could you please tell where from ?
 
I get mine from Hillfolk Musket Supplies here in Sask....with all the sponsors on this site trying to flog their wares, you'd think that one of them would sell the excellent Swiss Black Powder or any Black Powder for that matter. I was in P&D on a road trip and they had no BP, they showed me pyrodex, I don't think they knew what real BP is.
 
AJ - I have never loaded the 50, but I have found 4350 to give excellent accuracy in 45-70 with lead bullets, with a 405 grain RNFP I was getting 1 3/4 inch 5 and 10 round groups at 100 yds with vernier sights... The only issue was there was a ton of unburnt powder left in the barrel, which I believe was due to the fact that the pressure was not coming up enough for proper combustion.

Another couple powders that may be useable in your application are SR-4759 or Blackhorn 209...
 
When done right, in these large cases, BP is more accurate and safer because it fills the case completely and is easy to ignite. Another option for some is a duplex charge of 10% 4759 then 90% Black Powder, this leaves a clean barrel and chamber and one could shoot all day without wiping/cleaning, and shells would chamber. Clean rifle at the end of the day, duplex loads of smokeless/BP are safe because the case is still full of BP.

How does 777 and Pyrodex work in these old cartridges?
 
H-4831 works very well as a black powder substitue in straight case black powder cartridges. I don't like the mess and cleaning required with Black Powder, never mind the trouble of finding it and the danger of storing it.
 
I have lots of Curtis & Harvey and some G&O black, but I pefer to use smokeless when hunting. I am looking forward to hitting something with the big slug. This is a great cartridge for gopher shooting in the spring.:).

I could see that. Have you messed with duplexing? I've done a bit of it in my Marlins and it burned very clean.

I believe that Mike Venturino published some load data (long ago) with smokeless load data for the .50 2.5" case.
