6.5mm bullet for moose hunting

Whoever said that the SST is a good bullet for this purpose obviously has not ripped one apart. The jacket (even at the tail) is quite thin. I wouldn't use them on game larger than deer.

Either of the bullets you suggest would be just fine but the recoil of the 140 partition would be better suited to a smaller framed person.

2 dead moose and a black bear never complained.

Of the bullets the OP suggested, I'd got with the partition - plenty of bullet and much better trajectory.

I'd shoot a moose with a fairly wide range of 6.5 bullets myself however; SST's, Gamekings, TSX's, TTSX's, Partitions, GMX, whatever.

Just focus on shot placement in the boiler.

I load the 140 NP for a hunting load (shoots flatter and has less recoil) I have some 160's around although I never bothered working up a load and they are discontinued as mentioned.....

Im guessing 6.5x55 ? what rifle ?

Yep, in a t3 lite.

Dave.

Moose with the 6.5x55

I have shoot moose with this caliber using the 140gr Nos/Part, and wasn't impressed with the reaction of the moose. I've since moved to the 160gr Hornady, better bullet for MOOSE.

I use the 140 gr Barnes XLC. 100% weight retention.

Recovered after passing through a bull moose length wise:

does barnes still make these ?

i really like the original 140 grain barnes x bullet , but they haven't made these for years .
it is the only 140 grain bullet that has a similar length to the original 160 grain bullet used in the swedish mausers .

I personally would use the 140 Noslers. My only advice is dont go cheap and load cheap speer like a member of my hunting party did. I had to track that moose for two miles before I could get a kill shot. The bullets didnt hold together. My 175 partition worked like it was supposed to

I have shot one moose with a 140gr 6.5mm Partition from a 6.5x55 and I changed to a 338win afterwards. I'm not saying that it will not kill moose but in this case it didn't. It stopped on a neck vertebrae and did not put the moose down, a couple more shots from a 308 with 180gr bullets did. In hindsight I should have made a heart and lung shot but I thought the neck shot would work at the time. Range was around 150 to 200m.

No, they no longer make the XLC, afaik. Wish I could find some more.

No offense but the Sierra doesn't hold together on moose.Used it once and picked jacket/shrapnel out of the surface wound...........Harold
