It would save us a lot of headaches. that's for sure:). My regular 'smith did a top notch convert for me---even with the full instructions there were still surprises for him (and me) that we had to deal with.

I wouldn't want anyone chopping the existing receiver unless they were either experienced or fully insured:)

No, there are talking about cutting the back off the SL8 and plastic welding the G36k rear end on. Known as the Tom bostic or chopstic kid conversion.

Luke, you did a "stock block" conversion.

Not sure if it helps, but you're welcome to the instructions from when I did mine a few years back. If you can get your hands on a dewat rear reciever/hinge it's worth it;) Hope it helps.

IC...what is the brand of plastic weld you used? did you get it here in Canada?

Those instructions are worth gold.....maybe I should look for a rifle again!!!!

I used Devcon Plastic Welder II however the actual bonding methods vary. I think I just googled the name and my city and a few suppliers popped up.

You got that right:)

In regards to plastic "welding", this looks like an adhesive/glue that you do yourself. Or is there an actual welding process in which you can take the item into a shop somewhere? (Please excuse the potentially dumb question:redface:) I'm just worried about the strength of a homemade glue job versus a more professional process (if one is avaialble at all)

Hi everybody!

Anyone know the weight difference between a Sl8 barrel and a G36 one? I'm looking for a way to reduce weight... I often think about buying a G36 barrel or reduce thickness on my Sl8...

Thank You.

G36e barrel (18.6") are nearly impossible to find, even in the USA. I've been trying to import one for myself for a while now.
G36k barrels are very popular, but mine already installed. If I ever take it off I can weigh it.
I think Dlask arms might be able to make you a light profile barrel.

I believe that some of the 'smiths will offer a custom turning service using your existing HK barrel to mill it down to a G36 profile. I picked up an SL8 that had the barrel turned by it's previous owner. I believe it was turned at TSE, but I'll have to check previous posts to verify.

Plastic welders are availbile, but apparently there is some higher skill levels involved. I believe they are using a fibre reinforced Nylon 66, but I'd double check that as its been a few years since I did my conversion. Between the metal spine and the Devcon mines been solid, however I was a bit particular about following the instructions for the bond and let it cure completely. I'd heard stories about failures but they tracked back to not following instructions, not mixing and/or curing the Devcon as directed.

This is a pic of how my spine was installed. It's my understanding that most of the strain is taken up by this connection on top and the pins on the bottom. It was a tough cut to make though:eek:...

I am considering buying a plastic welder for stock conversions. I've been looking at these: http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=plastic+weld
They were mentioned on HK pro.

Thank You.

I am waiting for a barrel to arrive so I can do this. I ordered from Wolverine. I have been advised by a smith that reprofiling the barrel may affect accuracy.

So, more questions for the conversion gurus....

Years ago, I did a conversion with a "top notch" conversion. Length of pull was way to long (probably why many people go and get one of the shorter "C" or "K" stocks??). I ended up having it shortened by someone experienced in plastic work.

Anyhow, with the stock so shortened, I noticed that on many of the conversions, the stock covers the ejection port when folded to the right. 1. Is this always the case when a conversion is done? (I take it that this isn't the case on the real HK G 36's, right?)

It looks like a "tom Bostic" conversion would allow the whole stock assembly to be mounted in a more forward way. 2. Do all the stocks on the Bostic type conversions clear the ejection ports when folded? It looks like they do, but I wanna check with you guys.

3. Can a Bostic conversion be done retroactively to those who have done the "top notch" type conversions without having to get new trigger parts, grip, etc? I thought/hope that just changing the rear /hinge would be enough......

Thanks in advance for taking the time to think about these questions:)

When a hinge is added without shortening the reciever it extends the hinge placement over an actual G36 by almost 1.5 inches. If you use the Top Notch stock it also has to be almost 1.5 inches longer to make up the difference so that it doesn't interfere with the ejections port. (i.e. when folded it's about 1.5" longer and just over 3" longer when the stock is in the extended position). Top Notch had to make its own design to accomodate their product which ended up being even longer than even an E variant. This makes the LOP uncomfortably long for some. If you change to a shorter stock to attempt to make the LOP more managable (say a C or K variant) it will now interfere with the ejection port when folded as it will be shorter.

It looks like a "tom Bostic" conversion would allow the whole stock assembly to be mounted in a more forward way. 2. Do all the stocks on the Bostic type conversions clear the ejection ports when folded? It looks like they do, but I wanna check with you guys.

Yes

Yes, there's no issue as the Top Notch hinge doesn't physically change the reciever dimensions. It's is why some prefer this route to a Bostic conversion. You can remove the TN hinge anytime and return to the SL8. Once the Bostic conversion is done there is no turning back. This may increase or decrease the value of the SL8 depending on the quality of the conversion. There are risks, but they are managable and, in my opinion, the payoff is more than worth it... but you know what they say about opinions and hemmoroids:D

Thanks in advance for taking the time to think about these questions:)

No worries. Many have helped me over the years, it's nice to be able to give a little back every now and again;)
