I feel like a thread stalker.
The now defunct American Hunting Dog Club published an excellent book called "Training the Sporting Dog, 2nd Edition". You can get directly from the ahdc.org site.

I also have the 3 DVD set of Fowl Dogs by Rick Stawski.

What kind of upland hunting dog? pointing or flushing dogs? I have george hickox's flushing series. I like it. I also ordered spaniel training series dvds from Buccleuch Estates Ltd from scotland. Read about him in gundog magazine. They refered to him as the spaniel whisperer. I like learning new methods of training for hunting dogs. That way you can use what works best for you and your dog. If you're training pointing dogs I can not offer any advice because I have no experience with pointing dogs.

Those are essential reading, exactly the books I would recommend.
I would also add Joan Baileys 2books, How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves, and How to Have the Best Trained Gundog.
Also if you are looking for Force Fetch info, Evan Graham can't be beat.

I should have also included Scenting on the Wind-Scent Work for Hunting Dogs. If you don't understand scent and how it works for your dog, you're missing an important piece of the puzzle.

Sounds like you're about to embark on a life-changing journey. I too can't help you with the pointing dog training, but I will suggest a few fundamental concepts nomatter what training source you use.
1. Train short sessions as often as you can - keep 'em wanting more.
2. Quit on success, rather than adding skills until the dog fails. If you go too far by mistake, backtrack, succeed, then quit.
3. Remember that any of the dogs failings are really your failings - with that in mind it's a lot easier to identify problems and find solutions to them.
4. Enjoy the journey

When you start hunting with bird dogs you will wonder why you didn't start years ago. There is a great deal of info on the net. One thing to remember is that the dog will "know "twice as much about hunting than we will ever know. My dogs are taught to come and whoa thats it.
