Can the Smith and Wesson M&P pistols swap barrels to change caliber?
I know the Glock 22 in .40 cal will accept a 9mm conversion barrel and the 9mm mags fit the 22 frame because I have one.
Wanstall's has a M&P on special, but it is in .357 Sig. If a .40 or 9mm barrel conversion would work, it would be a real bargain!

Actually, both a 9+40 barrell SHOULD work, ASSUMING that the 357 Sig uses the 40S&W slide. There are conversion barrels for the 40S&W for 9mm from Storm Lake, a factory 40 barrel should convert 357 Sig to 40.

Yes, barrel swaps are possible, but aftermarket barrels may be hard to come by.

MY M&P started life as a 357Sig, and I got a .40 barrel for it through Questar/Storm Lake [nice barrel, although a little tight for reloads]. It's a straight swap...all other parts are exactly the same for either caliber.

Storm Lake also makes a 9mm conversion barrel...you can't use a stock S&W barrel on your .40/.357 gun...but as long as you have M&P 9mm magazines, you're good to go.

_If_ those aftermarket barrels were easily available, it would be a no-brainer to shoot all three calibers from the same gun. Unfortunately the barrels are hard to come by...I believe ordering through Questar is even more expensive now than when I did it a few years ago. Of course if you have connections in the US...;). Not that I would recommend doing anything on the shady side of the law, of course.

To the OP...that's part of the reason I broke down and got the wanstall special. My plan is to add the Storm Lake .40S&W barrel. The mags are marked for both calibres already so it's a straight swap.

I guess the 6K of 9x19 that I have thru my M&P40 with a stock S&W 9x19 barrel was all my imagination then ; - )???? I've been swapping back and forth between 9/40/357 since I got it almost 5 years ago.

Hmmm...Interesting. Does it give good performance?

I'm also on mp-pistol.com forums, and the common wisdom there is that you need a conversion barrel to do this [I don't know...I don't have a 9mm barrel myself] and that using a stock barrel should not be possible. I'm amazed that nobody else has discovered this....

I hope it works out OK. I was tempted, but I have enough polymer guns for now. I'm saving my pennies for Ruger's new .22 revolver.

My understanding is that the 40/357 sig barrels interchange, and everything else about the gun is identical between the two. I had been told you needed a conversion barrel to go down to 9mm, and that 9mm cannot be converted up to 40. Sounds like a stock 9mm barrel may work as well. Cool.
