hunting in the rain

Hey. I was wondering what your thoughts are about hunting in the rain? Do you avoid it? Do you have good results or not so good? What do you do differently? Since what your hunting probably matters I would be going for mules and black bear.
 
for deer the stormier the better dont hunt bear im on van island if i didnt hunt in the rain woudnt hunt much
 
The animals live in it, rain or shine. I only find when a storm front is approaching the whitetail head to think bush for cover. :)

And when you only get 5 days to hunt, you hunt everyone of them rain or shine.
 
I dont' hunt when it's raining or snowing. As I understand it, the whitetail deer don't like inclement weather any more than we do, and tend to lie up under the firs and cedars. Unless you know where they're bedding, I think it's a waste of time. I've done it in the past and all I got was wet gear and a wet rifle.
 
I've shot deer in everything but a total downpour and I actually prefer to hunt deer while it's snowing... Rain sucks though if you've got to track one and I can admit I've lost a couple deer in the rain.
 
For whitetails I think wind is the greatest factor, I've noticed less movement in driven rain/snow and shot deer in both in calmer weather, Find a spot between feed and bedding areas. If anything I think they move between the two in moderate rain/snow. Art

The rut throws that out the window. I've seen Big bucks during the rut, do everything against all the rules of deer hunting.
 
For me, as much as I love hunting, I love being in the camp with the guys more. Since many of them are older, they don't go out at all if it's raining, I will maybe go for a walk but I won't sit. I head in early for cards when the weather is crappy.
 
Last night it rained and it was quite windy. Deer moved into the fields about an hour earlier than usual. And I tagged a 5X5. Fishing on the other hand is a different story. They never bite in the rain. I guess they hate getting wet:D
 
I enjoy hunting in the rain.
The only downfall I can imaging (provided you are dressed appropriately) is the early demise of a blood trail.
Scent is reduced dramatically, the forest floor goes silent with wet leaves and brush, plus you can count on less people out there as evident by a lot of the previous posts.
The rain is a great to to take a slow walk in the woods, some of my most productive hunts have been in "less than desireable" weather.
 
Very hard for them to smell you in the rain, big advantage.

Pick the crappiest day and that very often yields some good results.

Throw some cold into that rain then you really have something.

As others have stated, when the rut is on anything can and does happen.Other than that, pattern their movement pick your spot rain or shine and hope for the best.

Agreed, it's a great time to be walking, no noise, not much worry about scent and usually not to much hunting pressure.
 
The Worst bear hunting you can have is in a cold rain. For all the time i spend working and hunting in the bush I could count on one hand the number of bears I have seen walking around in a bitter cold rain. My theory is that like a dog, their fur gets soaked through and allows water to reach their skin very easily. They are then more likely to hunker down, curl up and keep warm, just like a dog.
 
For coastal blacktails I wait for crappy, windy, rainy days. No sounds to give you away and the light is dim enough at noon to pass for dusk so the deer are out moving around much more than on a sunny day.

They (whitetails) bed in the same place rain or shine...and if you want to consistanly kill whitetails you had better know where that is...also, just to let you in on a very very well kept secret that only the very very best die hard whitetail hunter know about...(looks both ways)...there is a clothing product called Gore-tex and once you find it and acquire it, the rain will bother you no more than it does those elusive whitetails....happy hunting!!!
