Ruger Mini 30 (any thoughts?)

I have a new one 581 with a Leupold on it, I shot a nice 4x4 white tail 2 weeks ago. I used Hornady's one shot he ran 10 yrds dead.. It's nice and light and plenty accurate, I would use it again no question.

I want a good rifle (powerful, accurate, reliable and capable of taking down a decent size dear.) That and something thats just fun to have like an M14 except Im to cheap to afford the 762x51 nato ammo so I was wondering if anyone had any imput on the ruger mini 30 that fires 762x39 ammo. If not tell me if you have any suggestions for an alternative. Keeping in mind Im trying to avoid buying an SKS.

Forget the mini-30, it's overpriced for what it is. The CZ858 is just as much gun, with a pistol grip, for less money. If you're looking for a semi to scope, the m14b/m305 is a solid choice, provided you pay $120.00+ for the mount or have your $50.00 one reinforced.

If you're looking for an accurate rifle to take down big dear, some may argue that a mini doesn't fit the bill:

The M14 weighing in at 11.5 lbs unscoped is horrible compared to the Mini 30s 6 lb 6oz...The CZ878 handles like a club Vs the Mini 30..

I had a Mini-30 years ago. It would group around 2". I made soft point for it by pulling FMJ and seating a soft point.

I caried it on several hunts but never got to try it . Reports here say the 7.62x39 works well on deer.

Have and love my Mini. If you want lots of options to make (your rifle) the minis have so many aftermarket parts its ridiculous.

From the box there are a few mods to do that help a lot.

Trigger

Adj gas block or bushing orifice change (to slow the op rod increasing accuracy and reducing wear, easier on the scope)

Barrel strut - adds rigidity to the barrel increasing accuracy.

Then if you want to really get carried away you can get a competition barrel. Best messin around gun you'll ever buy. My mini will be in my possession until the day i die.
