what's a good rimfire for a young kid to start on

Youth model Henry lever, Savage Cub (only a single shot though), CZ Scout. Those are the only ones I've had experience with, although there are several other youth oriented rifles out there. Henry mini bolt, Cricket, Stevens Favorite (although it has a trigger like a 30 dollar Chinese air rifle).

Easy to operate and decent sights? < $400ish

Without naming any brands of rimfire, you will get enough suggestions here anyway. I would say any good, accurate rifle or pistol.Nothing worse than introducing them to shooting with junk. There are plenty of decent guns out there in that price range if used, especially more so in rifles.Kids learn quick, most guns are not very complicated anyway. Why not just start him/her off with some thing that you would use yourself. As long as they can hold the firearm comfortably they can shoot it.
The first gun that I ever shot when I was 10 years old was a Winchester 30-30 and had no problems.Have you tried having him/her shoot with any of your firearms for "fit".
There was no mention of how old the youngster was or whether you wanted a pistol or a rifle,so just generalzing.

I started my son on a Savage Cub-T. It is a perfect starter gun. It has open peep sights, correct LOP with thumbhole for solid kid grip, nice trigger, is very accurate (I shot it myself) and was easy for him to operate. I bought it for him brand new in April, scoped it in July and he's just grown into my CZ452 Style (repeater) now after less than 500 rds down the pipe.

So I guess I have it for sale. I don't have a listing in the EE for it, but if anybody is interested in it, just PM me.

The CZ Scout would be my first recommendation moving forward due to their ability to convert to a repeater, but they are a pricey way to get started....

Jumping on a much heard band-wagon...you can't beat an old Cooey single shot (pref 39 for tiny). The second "manual" #### on those single shots is an awesome feature. hey are accurate enough to not discourage a young shooter and, above all, affordable. Been used for 60+ years and, should be used again!

I'm collecting a "rough" stock this weekend just to cut down for my 8 year old.

I bought my 12 yr old son a CZ455LUX in .22LR. He loves it and it's of the quality that he can be proud to pass on to his son some day. I have a 10/22 but I don't think it's a good choice for a "kid". My son used to shoot mine before I got him the CZ. He would pound through ammo without really thinking or aiming. His groups went from 5" to 2" at 100 yrds over night. Get a nice bolt action and teach him how to shoot. May I also recommend "no scope" until he has mastered the irons first? If kids start with a scope, they never want to learn the art of aiming with sights.

I got a Savage MKIGY (youth model) for my grandson. I think it is not as small as the other "child" size 22s. As AWOL said, a bolt is better than a semi-auto, to instill proper shooting technique and state of mind, that is one shot - one hit, every shot should count.

That's why I got a single shot instead of a repeater.

Did He or she have an air gun yet if they have semi auto might be ok maby has learnd that one shot one hit already. If so 10/22 with just the 10 round mag.

The thompson hot shot is another well made youth rifle. It has peep sights and is easy to load. It has an adustable length of pull too. Its already on the second daughter and I'm already regreting the 1022 that replaced it for the first.

The scout is excellent. Accurate, great sights and will last for generations. Restock it when your boy is older and he has the only 22 he'll ever need.
