Well I've never tired calling anything in before but I was given a Buck Grunter for xmas last year and I'm thinking about trying. Anyone have any experiance as to if this will work or at least help me? When would the best time to try this be? Due to work I'm fairly limited with time to hunt and new to the area so I'm trying to hedge my bets so to speak. Thanks

I've never tried it, but have heard that late Sept/early October is usually the best time. Bucks are said to be very combative then and will be eager to try and one-up another for better doe territory.

I call in Fallow Bucks during the Rut, with a PVC tube an a whitetail call, you have to work the call a little different but ive had stags run into 20m from a fair distance back during the peak rut, i plan on filming it come next March/April...
very very exciting way to hunt an productive if you do the right things

It absolutely works. They must be in rut for best results; they must be able hear you grunt; they must not know you are there before you grunt. They must also have had little disturbance. Bucks will be reluctant if quad drivers are cruising up and down nearby trails, etc.

There are more techniques that work, than don't work, so don't stress about your particular situation. Get close to deer without them knowing you are there. Watch the wind. Grunt a few times and listen. Every few minutes, grunt some more and listen.

I sometimes use a grunt to disguise myself when I move. I move as quietly as possible, and very slowly; if I make a noise, I will grunt a few times. I have called bucks to me as I move on trails. Rattling horns works too, but I hate carrying them in the bush.

Yes it works but take it easy, the deer will need to be in a certain mood and in the early season you may only pull in immature curious deer. Call soft and in moderation. If you call too often from a certain stand all you are doing is telling the deer where you are and they learn to stay away. If a deer is downwind and you call, you may have just educated the deer for life. And...only call when you have great camo and a good backdrop, if you call from a bare tree you could be skylined, the deer may cleary see you and then that spot is ruined. Just my opinion.

The best grunt tube IMO is the "True Talker" by HS calls (I think)...I've had it for 5 or 6 years now. I have called in more deer in late October and early November (pre-rut) than any other time (using a grunt tube and/or rattling antlers).

You have to learn what works through trial and error. In my experience deer aren't as susceptible to calling as moose or elk. I have succes calling deer about 10% of the time and I have yet to bring in a buck that I want to shoot but I have alot of fun watching the "teen" bucks get wound up.

Well, as for camo, camo makes no difference with deer, you can wear a clown suit and it wouldn't change a thing(big wigs possibly could be seen). They simply cannot distinguish between camo and anything else.

Wind can be your friend or enemy as well as noise.

Many different calls and times to use them, maybe look at doe bleats as well.

There are locating grunts, mating grunts, balls out heading to a fight type grunts.Youtube some calling videos, easier to understand by listening.

A set of rattling antlers would also be a good addition with the grunt.

I put some stink on the bottom of my hunting boots and came out of the bush just out
of an old logging landing. There were four does there and the biggest I suspect was the
mom doe. Behind her was a younger one and two more scattered about.
She looked through me and started to snort. There was a big boulder I inched over to and slowly stood on top of it. She snorted some more and then started to stamp her one front hoof. I was almost certain there was a buck behind me with the going on's.
She snorted more and then did the four legged stomp. The young one inched backward
into some cover and the other two did the same. By this time my rifle was unshouldered
and checked for a round in the chamber. I figured for sure she was going to come running after me. This went on for about a dozen minutes or so.
I think she was trying to convince her nose that I wasn't a buck.
She decided to turn her tail and mosey away slowly and in no panic, checking over her
shoulder a few times.
Darn right comical in it's own way.

My experience is that Whitetails are a bit more receptive to calls than the Mulies.

I have a grunt tube that will mimic doe/young buck/mature buck grunts. I prefer to use the mature buck grunt VERY sparingly. In my area, I find that the bigger bucks will chase away the young bucks before they would try on another big boy. I think there are just too many does around for them to bother putting up a serious fight. I like to mix the doe and young buck together to hopefully make a bigger buck be less cautious and just charge in.

I have one of those bleat in heat calls and have tried it a few times; never had even a trace of success with it, even on a buck on the road in front of me while I was driving home.

cheers mooncoon

I always carry rattling antlers and a grunt or two with me at all times. Both have accounted for numerous mature bucks.

Rattling in conjunction with grunting, or just grunting can be very effective. My biggest buck to date was called in with a grunt. He was hearding a doe and at the sound of my grunt, came charging towards me. I shot him at about 30yds.

Some advice once given to me was to blow little and listen lots. Don't be discouraged if it doesn" t seem to be working. In thick cover you may attract deer you never even get to see. I have had mixed results with bucks circling downwind and busting me. Never even knew they were there until you hear them go crashing away. I also turned a small buck around at quite a distance to come check it out. It was windy and I was blowing it like a trumpet. Try and see, when it works it is quit a thrill. Same with rattling. Good luck

I disagree with the camo comment, baggy full body 3D leafy camo while motionless in a stand with good cover....it is helpful.

That's the only part that matters. The camo part is just a waste of money.

In Sask. it has been illegal to wear camo during rifle season for many, many years. Know any good deer shot in Saskatchewan?

I have proved to myself many times (while wearing bright red coveralls, or jeans calling coyotes, or just on a hike in my hiking stuff and a big blue pack) that being still, and a broken outline are all you really need.

Watch out... if you dont know how to use it you may get or come close to geting f**ked by a buck!!! no joke!!

(Yup i know this from Personal experience) NO Joke! it was a 6-8 point buck!

i was too busy laughing my ass off to shoot him!!!! and i had gun on me!

Right on you guys are great I never relised that this actually worked I always kinda thought that deer calls = gimick. I found a Premos learn to call deer dvd and wow just wow this has some major potential they had a couple of kids (10 or younger) calling in does and damn near getting run over using a fawn distress call some amazing footage

I used the doe bleat call last year and killed 2 deer. Neither I can say came into the call. Whether It made them curious or less spooky I dont know. I did bring in 2 fawns within 30 yards of my ground blind and I think it was a combination of the call and maybe curiosity of seeing the pop up tent blind. One came directly towards the tent.
