308 or 7mm rem mag for moose

This is not a theory. I have done this during the last season with a .308 with 165 gn TSX at just over 500 yards.

This season I will be hunting with a .270 and will not hesitate if the same condition prevails.

The key to developing confidence is practice, practice and more practice…

Conclusion? 7mm seems better. It'll probably be a longer, heavier gun and have far more kick for the gain. It's inefficient when compared to 308, but it makes a loud boom, which should probably count for something.

I'd stick with the 308 myself and save the money. If you're itching to get another gun, go buy something, just accept that you're buying something because guns are awesome not because you need it. I learned that about $15,000.00 ago.

For those that think 250fps and 2" at 300yrds a huge improvement, I was wrong.;)
 
I have used a few different chambered rifles over the years. The 7mm rem mag just plain and simple works. The last moose hunt I was on last week I am sure a baseball bat would have worked. That is about how far you could see;) I am definitely looking for something with a short barrel, sights and lots of punch next time I go. Life is too short to have only gun..
 
If we are talking something that work, would be far from what i would choose but my wife took our 2 last mooses with her Bavarian 85 243 loaded with 95 gr SST at 3200 fps direct in the boiler room at 200 metres both did not walk 15 feets so i would not be worry either a 308 or a 7 mm will do a good job if hit in the good spot... JP.

That meant that as an accumulation of all their experience they had shot near and far with a variety of what some are calling sub-par moose calibers, and successfully.
I then posted that the fellow particularly attached to his 30-30 has taken moose out to 200yds, one of which I witnessed at that range.

See you may think you're making sense, but you're very hard to understand. Inheard it is hard? What is that even supposed to mean? inthough it would be fun to apply that experience?

Get one of the Husqvarna 9.3X57 rifles from Tradex, less than $250, shorten the barrel to 20 inches, solder the front sight back on, go to the range to sight in, and go hunting.

Dies, brass, powder and bullets for $150, will load enough ammo to hunt for the next 10 years.

And, don't forget to post pictures, :)

I.ve hunted moose with both these calibers. The only advantage a 7mm magnum will give you is better ballistics and accurracy beyond 300m. A .308 is fully capable of downing a moose out to 400m so at 150-200m no problem.
