Brands of 22LR ammo

I've tried pretty much all the standard available .22 ammo in my 597 and have found so far that the Blazer is one of the better ones. In the last 2 bulk packs that I have bought I have not had a single fail-to-fire or jam. The Thunderbolts are a very dirty round and lots of no-fires.

To find which brand your gun will like, you pretty much have to buy them and experiment. Not all .22s will like the same ammo. So far, I have found that both my LR and WMR both like the CCI brand of ammo.

So I seem to read a lot of ppl not liking Blazer and Thunderbolts and some other brands too, saying they're garbage, etc.

Was wondering what exactly makes them so bad? Is it because they're dirty or duds or what?

What brands are generally good and which should be avoided?

It depends on what you use to shoot, i only have a 22lr semi rifle and it hates federal, winchester, but loves cci mini mags and stinger. I have friends who shoot 22lr bolt rifles and use federal and winchester no problem.

I tried many different brands in many different guns I have...most common likes were Winchester 333/555s. no problems with ftf or fte...just all round great plinking, target, and gopher medicine. So it is all i use in all my .22 rifles.

Have only ever had problems with thunderbolts no fires and also failure to extract but this is only in a Marlin 795. I have only recently read they they are actually not recommended for the Marlin but am not sure why.

A few years ago it seemed like I had many FTF's with many brands. Now FTF's are a rare occurrence. Perhaps quality control among the manufacturers has finally improved.

My 10/22 like most Winchester, particularly Super-X.

Anything copper-plater usually cycles better for me (so far), the lead-nose Blazers gave me the most failure-to-feeds by far (somewhat magazine related though).

:)

The only .22 ammo that is "garbage",

is the kind that doesn't shoot accurately and reliably in your gun.

Don't take anyones word for it, try out all you can in yours.

I find the CCI Mini Mags,Stingers,Standard Velocity all work well with my semis, some just show preference over the different loads depending on the pistol.Blazers also made by CCI are consistent in maybe half of my .22's,but no problem with revolvers and also very inexpensive in comparison.

Ok so I guess I should go out and buy 50rd boxes of various brands and just try a bunch of them out and see which ones I should stick with? or should I buy a bit more (a brick of each)?

That's pretty well it.Try a few brands and see which is more accurate and cycles the best in your gun.I wouldn't buy them by the brick yet, until you find the ammo that works reliably well for you
.Some guns are finicky, while others will shoot anything.Luck may be on your side and you just might have one of those.

I'm on a 12 brick streak of no FTF on Blazers.
I get maybe 3-5 duds, and have had my only stovepipe with the Federal value packs, and had pretty much nothing but problems with the 333 pack. Wouldn't chamber randomly, a lot of FTF.

Maybe my pistol just didn't like it, I am going to see how it works in a rifle. I also run a very dirty dirty pistol, so that probably is the problem too.

I shoot CCI Tactical AR bulk pack ammo. It costs a little more the some other bulk packs, but it cycles flawlessly out of my 10 22 and is the most accurate ammo i've used. I get it at The Shooting Edge

If there's anything I've learned from .22LR semi auto rifles, its that they're extremely picky. Some ammo might work in one gun. but that exact same ammo might not work out of the same model gun that your buddy has. .22s are dirt cheap, just find what works best for you.

I have two handguns in .22LR, a Ruger Single Six (Old Model) and a Browning Buckmark. In my case the revolver was getting a build-up of lead using CCI Blazer so I switched to CCI Standard Velocity and the problem went away. The Buckmark can shoot both all day with no problem using either ammo. I think the Blazer is somewhat hotter than the Standard Velocity and this made the difference in the revolver which has seen a lot of use.

I have a sig sauer mosquito that works best with cci mini mags but will also work well with the federal 525 bulk pack. Anything else works like sh@t or is not good for the gun.
I also have a ruger 10/22 that eats just about evrything I feed it but some ammo is better than others. T-birds are dirty and have misfires and failure to feeds. Winchester 333/555's were dirty too but feed well. Copper wash ammo tends to feed better and don't get all bent in the chamber. CCI is pretty high quality and is cleaner than the others but it is more $$$.
Winchester Dynapoint are also a good value round as they are cheap and work well in th 10/22. I have 'nanner mags for mine and the better the price the more I get too shoot!!! :ar15:
