155 grain lead bullet with Winchester 231

This is with a lead bullet in a .40 S & W case. You will have to check the overall length in your chamber. Make sure it is right. You didn't mention the configuration of the bullet ie., RN, TC, SWC as that will affect COL. You didn't say what firearm it would be shot through but Glock will not warrant any of their guns if you use lead bullets in them. Lots of shooters shoot them anyway. I use an aftermarket barrel for lead loads in my Glock. Others don't bother. You might want to research this.

I am using a Sig sauer 226, I am not sure what you mean by RN, TC or SWC...or even COL for that matter.
RN = Round Nose
SWC = Semi Wad Cutter
WC = Wad Cutter
Not sure what TC is either but I deduce it could be Turd Cutter...
COL = Cartridge Overall Length (If you are reloading this is one term you should know)
Or, alternately, truncated cone.

155 swc.
40 cal is very similar in recoil to 45acp especially if you use the nasty 180 grain bullet. I was looking to reduce recoil and increase accuracy and the 180 just doesn't cut it.
The nice people at Magma Engineering make a very nice 155 grain SWC cast lead bullet. Everyone who starts using it will not go back to the 180's, its that good.
So, if you are using a 155, that is a very good start. If it is cast lead then you don't have to juice it up too much. Now, I use a powder called PROMO. It only comes in 8 pound kegs and it is just like RedDot powder. My typical target load with the 155 grain SWC lead cast bullet is 3.6 grains of PROMO.
The idea is to keep the velocity of the 40 cartridge below 900 feet per second. When you do that recoil is lessened and accuracy improves. If you need to knock down steel plates, go to 3.9 or 4.0. I have witnessed scores go up 25% using the 155grain with 3.5 or 3.6...

I've been using the 5.0 grain method above. Havent shot it yet but I'm hoping it won't be a crazy shot using win 231. I'll let you guys know tommorow. Kinda nervous now.
