Chest rig advice for action shooting (rifle)

Hi all,

I'd like to get a simple MOLLE vest for the rifle and shotgun portions of 3 gun matches. I'd like it to be comfortable and pretty simple, especially around the shoulders (no clips and such that the but stock might rest on). I'll keep the loadout fairly low.

My dilemma is I'll never wear this over body armor, at most it will go over a sweater and I am approx 5'9" and 160 lb (soaking wet). Most of these rigs are adjustable but are built for much bigger guys or built to go over armor. I also see a lot of regular and XL sizing's but no mediums or smalls.

Anyone out there have a rig that fits you good and could still adjust smaller if your a bit bigger or if you are around my size have you found a nice system that works?

Check out HSGI (High Speed Gear Inc.).

I can adjust my Warlord down to fit my 8-year old. I'm 5"8" and 210lb. Not all their rigs fit my frame, the Wasatch is too big, the Weesatch fits fine (both plate carriers).

The Warlord Ver 2 might be what you are looking for (it has fixed pouches though), the Warlord Ver 4 is strictly molle and you add your own pouches. Their Taco mag pouches are pretty nice, I'm liking them.

They are not the lightest rigs I've ever had, but they are tough, have a lifetime warranty and tons of options.

One Shot Tactical sells them.
 
I would get something simple like the Maxpedition Mini rig to support an AR-15 pattern rifle. Most stages won't require more than 40 rounds, so these days you only need to carry 3-5 mags. The mini has room to add more pouches (shotgun etc) if needed.

HSGI makes very nice stuff but it is total overkill for a match (in my opinion).

I bought a simple Eagle/SKD rig a few years ago and thats served me well - though it does more than I need. Halfway down this page on MM - http://www.militarymorons.com/equipment/2ndline2.html

The one downside of the Eagle rig is the padded shoulder straps - these can sometime interfere with shouldering a rifle YMMMV - the Maxpedition Mini has simple web/flat straps - and thats what I'd get if I was starting out now.
 
Maxpedition chest rig is a good one to look at as well as the Blue Force Gear Ten Speed chest rig and the HSGI AO chest rig.
 
I'm not a fan of chest rigs, just a personal preference. I'm using the bladetech thigh rig, 2 versions either holds 3 or 6 mags.

Much easier for me to grab mags especially when prone off my thigh rather than trying to get one out of a chest pouch.

I still think that rig is overkill.

If you already do a lot of action shooting you'll likely be faster running pistol mags off your belt (muscle mem.) Only benefit of this vs. Maxpedition Mini is if that the pouches will hold M-14 and VZ 858 mags (total of 4). Realistically you could just add a few taco pouches or shotgun ammo carriers to the Mini and have similar versatility with less weight.

Cerendrad: I am about the same size as you. My current setup is the above Eagle/SKD rig with my first AR mag and 2 pistol mags on the belt. With everything loaded I could have 10 AR mags and 7 pistol mags at the beep - i.e. double or triple most stage round counts - complete overkill. If I was starting over I'd just get the Mini and run with as much ammo as possible (pistol, rifle, shotgun) on my belt.

Thanks for all the advice especially on the sizing. I'll check out the HSGI, mini, and the others you mentioned. I've got some reading to do. I'm thinking kind of like you Raks, I want to keep my CR speed belt on, and my pistol mags on it, where I'm used to it (hopefully that's faster or at least not slower). I thought I could put 4 AR mags low and in front with one more on my belt for prone reloads (you had a good point on prone reloads), and then shot shells in a row higher up or maybe 2 rows above the pistol mags.

If there is anything else I should look at please let me know.

The Warlord is not small. It's named Warlord for a reason ;)

If you are within driving distance of Trenton ON come into the store and try some different ones on.

Then take a look around again and see what other options there are.

Also if you can, get out and try some rigs.

If needed we'll take you out to the range to try different rigs.
 
I know people are going to do some brand bashing on this one, but I picked up a UTG molle package, with two drop leg molle sections, a double shooting belt, molle vest, 2x pistol mag pouches, 4X ar mag pouches, dump pouch holster, and a buch of other crap ill never use. but the vest, belt and drop leg plat forms are AWESOME. I can run full shotty/ar/pistol gear in multiple configurations with mags on belt, chest, drop leg or WE. or i can take off the vest and run belt, drop leg only. I can holster drop leg for the events that allow it, but i can also put the holster on the belt. Im a small guy too, but the chest rig had a surprisingly good set of adjustments. it can be worn over a t shirt, and with a few modifications, will fit over my armour, winter coat. the entire set up was about 130$ too... which was cheaper many stand alone belts I found, so value wise, this is a great deal.
 
Check out the airsoft forums (airsoftcanada) for some simple gear. There ate some cheaper brand gear that works but no where the quality of hsgi, or eagle.
Brands like flye, phantom, pantac will get you in the game for cheap. They will hold up to 3 gun use, but aren't meant for deployment overseas.
I grabbed a used ciras with all necessary pouches for what you are looking for for $80. It's good and comfortable.
The ciras in small seems to fit most ppl your size.
