Renewed appreciation for my Glock

I bought a G17 a couple of years ago to see what all the hype was about. After shooting it for a few months I decided it would be a keeper. I made a few minor changes to enhance my experience...NY1 spring, Glock 3.5lb "connector", extended mag & slide release, Pacmayer slip-on, magwell plug. I spent well under $100, installed the parts myself and IMO made a huge difference( for me).

What I really liked about the Glock was how simple it is to use. This simplicity became very apparent during this weekend's Holster Course. To be clear, I've never drew a loaded firearm from a holster or shot without a table/barrier in front of me. To say the least I was a little nervous at the start of the Course. However, the simplicity of the Glock safety design took a lot of the stress away. (Is the safety on? Did I decock before re-holstering?...etc.)

I learned to draw, shoot, re-holster, re-shoot, tacticle loads, emergency reloads, etc. I shot 300rds during the course without a single failure. However, simulated stove-pipe and double-feed failures were created to practice recovery techniques.
The course also taught me how to shoot while advancing, retreating, lateral, pivots, single strong-hand & weak-hand, double-taps to chest and single to head. IMO the simplicity of the Glock allowed me to focus on these new techniques rather than the HG. 6/10 students and both instructors were using Glocks...so there must be a reason;). I have other HG's with external safeties, DOA/SA, etc., but I chose to bring my Glock and made the right choice.

Sorry for the long winded note, but if you ever get a chance to go on a Holster Course...do it! It's alot of fun and don't forget to bring your Glock.

I recently had the same experience and went back to my glock from a tricked out CZ85 combat.

The cz85c was a great gun and I had trouble missing with it.... I just love the simplicity and reliability of the glock though.

safeties are not an "obstacle" thats hard to get over. for the last 2 years ive been shooting a m&p 9 with no external safeties for idpa. two months ago i bought a sti trojan and had to deal with an external safety for once. it only took a few draws to get used to turning the safety off. i dont find it a big deal really.

Glad to read other's feel the same way about their Glocks!
As mentioned I had other HG options to use for the course...1911 with ambi-safety, Sig p220, Browning HP. The "lightness" of a fully loaded Glock was an added bonus....hanging on my hip for the 2 day course.
I think my next upgrade is to replace the polymer sights for steel ones.

Glad you like your Glock.

But it really sounds more like you just prefer DAO handguns.

Keep in mind that almost everyone makes DAO handguns for those that prefer them. The list includes Smith & Wesson, CZ, Sig, Beretta, and Ruger among others. So Glock is not your only choice for your preferred trigger style.

Also worth noting; Canadian police and armored couriers are only allowed to issue DAO handguns to their staff. And it's for the exact same reason that you like them; There's nothing to forget when all hell is breaking loose.

I took my BB course with a CZ shadow, never forgot the safety once, never even thought about it actually, just did it.

I don't like glock for the reason that it doesn't shoot where I aim it, it just doesn't hold well for me.

Dexter...I think you're onto something.
The single action of my Sig 1911 is so light and crisp it makes it very accurate shooting off the table. It's also too pretty to have holster marks and if I ever drop it :(
The DA/SA of my P220 may take some time getting used to. Depending whether its been de-cocked or my HP hammer back with the safety on.

Forgot to mention that I'm really liking "shooting to re-set" on the G17.

Difference is the Glock will shoot even without a mag.:p

So will my M&P's. Incidentally, when my 15 year old took hiss BBC in May '10 there were 7 M&P's and 1 CZ on the line and the only malfunction all weekend occurred when one of the instructors demo'5 the El Presidente with his G22 - bang, bang - bang, bang - bang, bang - mag change - bang... Dammit!!!!

Priceless!!!

Was the ammo factory? I find it hard to believe, i have yet to have any Glock fail in anyway. Ive owned Several G17s, G22 and two G21sf's.

Its not a big deal, but its still one more step in the drawing and holstering process. For a match its not such a challenge. When someone is trying to kill you, it could very well be the most difficult task you never complete. Manual/positive safeties are dead IMO. No need for them.

Glad you like your Glock.

Although the Glock is a DAO/ "safe action system" the trigger pull is in no way comparable to any DAO pistol around. The length and weight of the pull is unmatched as is the reset. In addition, there's fewer parts, no exposed hammer(none at all actually) and several other benefits over the other makes/models you mention. That being said, the consistent pull of any DAO pistol makes trigger control a breeze when compared to DA/SA guns.

There is a safety on a Sig P220?

I still think the trigger is better on the M&P and the SR9. Both felt strange in the hand. I sold my G22 gen 4.

Thinking of getting a G17 gen 4 now.....
