I need some help picking out my first scope. I will be shooting paper from 100 to 600 yards. Rifle is 308 savage. What kind of magnification? 3x9? I can't buy a rifle scope and a spotting scope at the same time. I have about $600.00 to play with.

Peter, welcome to the board.
Whatever you do, don't buy a cheap scope.
$600 will get you a very good used scope for target shooting, and there are lots of guys on the Precision forum who can point you in the right direction.
The same amount will get you a top-shelf hunting scope, that could also be used for paper to the distances you mention.

You budget will get you a brand new Sightron from Mystic Precision(Jerry Teo), give him a message and he can set you up.
Something in the 4.5-14 or 6-20 would be good for your distances, also be able to spot bullet holes as well.
