Looking at getting a remington 700 in 300 winchester mag with a detachable magazine regular barrel not a heavy barrel. just wondering what options i got for thumbhole stocks preferable synthetic stock but not totally against wood or laminate.
1st: Remington 700 SPS DM 7mm-08 in a Boyds Pepper Laminate lightweight thumbhole stock. It weighs in at 8lbs 6oz scoped and mag loaded. It's wearing a Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40 in Leupold dual dovetail bases & medium rings. Stock required inletting around the bolt handle and magazine release buttons. 1 coat of Tru-oil matches the boyds factory finish. I didn't like the Boyds 1/2" recoil pad so I shortened the stock a half inch and installed a grind-to-fit limbsaver. It also required bedding around the recoil lug, but nothing major.
Factory laminated stainless steel fluted model 700 in 300 WSM, also wearing the same 3-9 Diamondback. 26" barrel, weighs in at 8lb 10oz scoped and unloaded. The stock is made by boyds for Remington, I believe. This stock weighs 4 oz more than the one on my 7mm-08.
If I were installing mine in on a floorplate model instead of a dbm, it would have only needed work around the bolt handle. I bedded the recoil lug because I was already in there.
A few years ago Remington made a 700 dbm with a laminated thumbhole stock. You may be able to find one. Otherwise you could see if you could this replacement stock from Remington.

They have become much better , the Vanguard I just did required NO inletting, just bolted up, did some bedding and all was good, you are going to want to bed any stock that you order. There is variance between one action and another, they use a template when they make these stocks so there will be some differences between one 700 action and another, although very small.
Find the Bell and Carlson head office and ask. Tell them what you want and have their sales staff do the leg work. FWIW, I think the solution will turn out to be getting one shipped from their warehouse rather than one turning up on a freestanding spinner rack at the gunshop one town over from home.
