Norinco 870?

I have been looking at getting a Remington 870 (or maybe a Mossberg, no decision yet), and noticed the Norinco copy. I figured I might go that way because Norinco's are usually cheaper, but the price I saw was only $10 cheaper. Is the Norinco the same quality as the 870?

The Norinco I was looking at was only had 14" barrels compared to the 870's with 26" pr 28". Is this a big issue if it will be used for recreational skeet/trap?

Norinco HP-9 is a direct copy of the 870. Works well enough though fit and finish can leave something to be desired. Longer barrel is better for skeet. Most people want the HP-9 in the tactical versions - 12 and 14.5 inch barrels. Fun guns to shoot mind you.

I was questioning that myself, its being marketed at the same price level as what it is copying. I was wondering if maybe somebody knew if there were any advantages to it.

If you are going to use the gun for recreational skeet and trap you'd be far better off with a longer barrel than a 14" cylinder-choke Norinco. The only reason to buy a Norinco is if you want the 14" barrel since Remigton no longer exports the 14" 870 other than for military/police users.

I have both, a Remington 870 Wingmaster and the Norinco... For what you are doing I would definitely go with the longer barreled Remington... In my opinion the quality of the Norinco falls somewhere in between the Rem Express 870 and the 870 Wingmaster... After some carefull polishing of the internals of my Norinco is is just as smooth as my late 80's Wingmaster that has had a gazillion rounds through it... Reliability with the Norinco has never been an issue, it was just a little rough to cycle when it came out of the box...

In my experience, the Norinco HP9-1 has had a better finish than the Remington 870 Express, and the Remington 870 Police and 870 Wingmaster - which in fit, finish, and quality control compare more favourably than does the Express - cost a lot more than the Express (or the HP9-1). If money is an issue, advantage Norinco.

On the other hand, either Remington may be approved on a Form 6NIA, whereas the Norinco HP9-1 simply cannot be. If USA travel is intended, advantage Remington.

Yeah, $10 was the price difference. The biggest difference I could tell (having shot neither) was the barrel length.

I guess that bring me to my next question, 870 or mossberg 500? :p

They look very similar, and they are in the same price range. Does anyone have experience shooting both?

Either the 870 express or the 500 will do you fine. You will get probably 50% say get the express and 50% say get the 500 which really settles nothing for you. It becomes your personal choice but if one fits you better than the other, that could be the deciding factor between the 2 guns. I have had both.

I also have both. "Either" is the correct answer. Rather, the 870 is my dad's and the 500 is mine, and they'll both do the same thing just fine. Both are excellent value for the money and I don't think I'd be particularly interested in a knock-off if it's only a few bucks cheaper.

The nork is not the same quality as the old Remington. It might be better or comparable to the new remington. Remington quality is now like Norincos, its a crap game, some are ok, some are rough and some are complete garbage. I would suggest you buy a used several year old Remington 870 that is in good shape. This will solve all your problems and be cheap to.

if you are looking at the rem 870 and the moss 500 i would go rem 870.
i was comparing the rem 870 express 3 barrel combo for $535 with $30 rebate @ LeBaron to the moss 535 3 barrel combo for $570 @ elwood epps.
the moss 535 has a 3,5" chamber (which i wanted) but when comparing the rest of the run build quality i have to say the rem 870 seemed better.
the moss has a aluminum chamber, rem is steel...i dont know how much this really matters but obviously steel is stronger.
moss had the top tapped and screwed so you could mount a rail on it for optics.. good feature, but i could get that done for $10 if i wanted it.
the big deciding factor was the safety... on the moss it is plastic...rem it is metal. also the locations i liked the rem better...but thats more personal preference.

i know that silverdale (Lanz shooting supplies) has the 3 barrel combo moss 500 for $500, which is exactly what the rem 870 costs after rebate.
sounds like you arent looking for the 3 barrel combos though, but i went with it because its cheaper to buy it all at once than buy a 2nd barrel in a year.

I have not shot the 870, but in fact its in my top 3 that im deciding to go with as i happen to be shopping around for a pump 12".

However back to your question, since iv been researching this for a while I have found that Remington has a promo running at this moment where you will get a $30 rebate from them (in the mail) after your purchase. So based on that fact alone I would go with the Original Rem. and you'll save $20 vs the Norinco

Hope this helps & Happy Shooting!
