Hey guys,
I'm new here, and looking into buying my first firearm. Since budget is an issue, I'm going with an SKS. Looking to mod it slowly but surely. Show off yours and give me some ideas!

There's another thread about this, but wasn't in the right section. I think the Red Rifles section might get more hits!

be careful modding an sks... its a 75$ rifle (from marstar anyway) that is decent for hunting with the right scope and such, but its easy to spend upwards of 400$ putting on a stock, and getting detaching mags ect... but you're better off buying nothing now, and saving up for a rifle with the features you actually want (optic mount platform, detaching mags, adjustable stock, synthetic stock whtever) cause I have seen guys with sks' modded out, and they actually end up paying MORE to mod it then to buy a rifle with the features they wanted built in.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess you're right. It's just easier to do it under cover with my GF. 100$ here, 50$ there...rather than spending 1000$ strait out! lol

I know the feeling... there's a Jeep outside that's been pieced together with no single part being more than $200 (other than the tires). Easysauce is right, it's cheaper & better to play with a stock/near-stock SKS and save your 50 here and 75 there for a rifle that'll do what you want out of the box.

That said, there was a dude talking about lasering his SKS with some motif ... dunno where that went but the idea was rather cool.

Just tuck that money away in increments, it adds up quick, she'll never know the difference. Then you can buy all sorts of toys. :) If anything I find my biggest complaint was the factory irons, I put a decent red dot on it and it's much more fun to shoot. But if you want to mod it with whatever go for it, if it lets you enjoy your sks more. Just be careful, theres plenty of junk parts out there.

Any mount that isn't directly fastened to the reciever is garbage. Including those reciever cover mounts with set screws. Don't bother changing the stock, the Russkis knew what they were doing, I haven't found a piece of plastic that holds the kit in better than the original wood stock yet (and if you're anything like me, you'll learn to love it, I couldn't wait to put plastic on my SKS but now I think it looks like ass with anything but wood). Get a Choate mount and a red dot, and the rest of the money you were going to waste on useless goofy tacticool crap you can spend on ammunition. Win win!

I was thinking a montt carlo tapco stock and a scout mount with a decent red dot...think its worth it?

Actually that may just be one of the smartest ways of modifying a SKS. It certainly will give better results than any receiver cover rail or Tapco Intrafuse with the plastic handguard rail. I love the Tapco stock on my 10/22 but on the SKS it just makes the gun too front-heavy IMO.

I would use a BC Tactical scout mount with a red dot.

But you could also save up and buy a CZ 858 and never look back.

Or get the SKS, leave it stock and use the cash to buy a lot of surplus ammo, because the price is never going down, so the time to buy is now.

They cost as much as the guns and I've never handled one but the Timbersmith stocks look good to me in thumbhole or montecarlo...

I would like to try a choate mount, but its not the only good mount. I use a BC tactical scout and a trs25 and it's perfect. Halfway through a crate, no issues. I couldnt get a cheek weld though, which is easily fixed with a pad or a stock with a higher comb, like you already want.

Btw you can get the Vietnam stock cheap @ sksman.

hell, save up 699$ and go buy an AR, boom you have detaching mags, built in sight mount on top, sweet telescopeing stock, its not 5 ft long, and for 200$ you can get a conversion kit to turn it into a swweeeeet .22 caliber ar. Im not even gonna get into how much fun 50 round drum mags are on a .22 cal ar, but you see what I mean. I recommend a "decent" .22 .i consider a 125-150$mossberg plinkster to be decent 45yrds i can put 40 shots in an inch or less if i do my part. but there are plenty of other 22s in that price range, and some super accurate bolt actions. but yeah, plinksters are cheap decent accuracy, 15$ 10 shot spare mags, get a decent 45-60$ bushnell or get really good at irons, or both, at 23 bucks for 525 rounds, instead of 200$+ for the same amount of fun/practise. just buy one gun for sure, more will follow in time. I know it took a bit to save up for a nice .45 for me, but it was worth it in the end, so glad i didnt settle for the glock since it just didnt feel right.
as for spending money on the GF,
I dont know about you, but i just never tell em what i spend on the guns, and if there aint no ring on mah finger you dont get no play, err pay. and yes dear that big box of ammo was like 50$ (1000rnds of 223)

I also like the Vietnam, or Jungle stock and chose the
Weaver Converta Mount. The cheek rest/comb and
grip are home made fiberglass parts.
