Hunting Moose on Ontario highways...?

I was driving home last night after 5 days of moose hunting (and not seeing anything), and my wife and I saw a bull and 3 cows. Now we have a cow tag and I was wondering what the specifics are about shooting moose off the side of the highway. They were standing in the grass between the gravel shoulder and the bushline. Obviously I know it would have to be day time but other than that what are the rules?

You would need to find out; if it was public land or private, if there are any by-laws governing the discharge of firearms, if that particular township falls into the "No shooting within 8 metres of the road"...If all that says you are good to go, then have at er.

However, you also have to think about; Are there cars coming down the road that the moose might run out in front of? If the moose runs into the bush line, who's property is it so I can contact them to be able to retrieve it?

Its a PITA but if all your ducks are in a row, you should be good to go.
 
I've put down a couple of those hazard's. Let'em jump the ditch,3 step's and dropped them.
On another occasion I came across an opp that had his light's on and driving REALLY funny.When I asked what was up he replied he was chasing moose off the road.
I offered to take of the situation but he said if I even tried to touch it he'ed have me in jail.
A week later a mini van hit a moose in that same spot,killing the parent's.
I hope he slept better knowing he stopped me from taking care of the hazard.
 
Correct me if I am wrong but if you are north of the French River can't you hunt off the roadways? I am sure that it used to be this way if it did change. A C.O. told me you can have a loaded gun on the road up north and you can shoot from the roadway but not down it or across it, this was a few years ago so I am not sure if something changed.

Just looked it up and there is no shooting from or across any maintained right of way for vehicular traffic, when I talked to the C.O. I was on an old logging road so maybe it wasn't considered maintained.

RIP to the victims first of all


second, I know you guys in Cochrane can tell the moose by just looking at the face, but you sure it was the same one???:rolleyes:

Do you seriously think the moose stood around in the same spot for a week?

RIP to the parents, but come one man, thats one weak argument for not being allowed to shoot a moose off the highway.

I'm glad you guys all have the comprehension of two year olds and actually read the post. I can't see anywhere that he mentions "the same moose" I see the "same spot" but not the same moose, could be a regular moose crossing for all we know, but I am glad you guys pay attention to what you read before you all reply.

He implied that because he wasnt allowed to shoot a moose off the highway, a family was killed a week later in a collision. What else would he be referring to?
 
I know of 2 spot's right now where there's a bull and a cow.
They've been there all summer and can be regularily seen about 100m off Hwy 11.
Nice sized one's at that.
The other is a cow and her calve's that have been hanging around my brother's property.
He see's them by the river and once in awhile they'll walk thru the camp.
Just because it's there doesn't mean you HAVE to shoot it.

sooo, did you get a tag to get one of the three???

come on zuke, its unfortunate that we have wildlife sometimes wonder onto roadways with tragic consequeces but blasting anything within range of a highway is not a solution
 
I'm a native,so I don't need a tag.No season's or limit's either.
Last moose I shot was a good 10 year's ago.
I'm single with no wife or kid's, and there ain't no way I'm eating one entire moose by myself.

thats the way it should be. anyone "hunting" from a road should lose their rights to hunting for a while. theres something that doesnt seem right about spotting an animal on the side of the road, shooting it, and being satisfied with what you've done. different strokes for different folks?

get off your lazy ass and find some property to hunt instead of cruising roads to find critters. one can only hope that sooner or later every road hunter will take a shot at the mnr robotic deer or moose over their "hunting" career ;)
