Hey Guys,
Going for an SKS for sure. That Marstar deal is really tempting. Now is Russian really better than Chinese? Really? I've read some people say yes, others not...I just dont know anymore...Accuracy? Reliability? Please enlighten me...I wont be buying another rifle for a few year and Im not a collector, so I just want an decent rifle that's accurate and reliable.

RUSSIAN or CHINESE?

Having voted Russian.....I must admit that I own a Chinese......one of my first rifles from many years ago. If I had to do it again though - Russian would be my flavour. I think mainly for the looks and the bayonet too (blade instead of the "pig stick").

Ill be changing the stock eventually and wont keep the bayonet either. Probably put a tripod one day...So do people choose Russian really just based on looks? Is there other reasons? Do both have chrome lined barrels? Accurate? Do chinese come packed with cosmoline aswell? So many questions...lol

I have both. The Russian, although much prettier than the Chinese, may or may not have considerable rifle wear. The Chinese new/unissued from Marstar are not as pretty, in fact never built to look good, have obviously brand new barrels, but often need adjustment and fitting alterations having never been in the field.

I think the Russian rifles look better, but they both shoot well. THe Ammo/rifle deal from Marstar is pretty good. I don't think you will see rifle get much cheaper than they are today. Early model Russian SKS rifles do not have chromed lined barrels, but it makes no difference if cleaned properly.

My Chinese is a chrome lined barrel, but I don't remember it packed in cosmoline (at least not that much). I purchased from a dealer, but I can't remember where/which one. As far as accuracy, I honestly haven't shot it in a while but it never really mattered at the time. Ammo was so cheap that it was a "have fun gun". :D

What do you mean by adjustments? Since I'm not knowledgeable in rifle ownership, Im affraid I wont know exactly what to do? :D. Will I have to go to a gunsmith and get him to alter it or adjust it?

It is all cosmetic. The Russian refurbs, some look better than others. The Chinese SKS are brand new the Russians are not. Do not get caught up with the so called quality numbers matching hand picked "Hector the Collector" hype. The Russian and Chinese SKS's shoot basicly the same. The Marstar deal is pretty good.

I'm not an SKS collector - I'll say that up front. I collect Czech rifles, but bought the SKS's to shoot. Neither of mine was "hand picked", both under $200.

Ordinarily I would have said Russian hands down, but I just got one of the new batch of "Chinese Military" SKS's. These were built (as I understand it) at a Russian-supervised factory in China, and are heavier and much better quality than the "civilian" Chinese Norinco SKS's I've encountered. Some of those have been pretty crummy.

The "Chinese Military" model I've just received is of a very high standard of quality - easily as good as, if not better than my other "keeper" SKS, a Russian Tula Arsenal model with a nice laminate stock and matching numbers. Both have chrome lined barrels. Both are very accurate, considering the type of weapon. They're a battlefield carbine, not a sniper rifle. The Chinese stock is a really nice piece of wood, and the fit and finish of the metalwork is excellent. Others have commented that the quality of the Chinese rifles they've received is not as good as the Russian; maybe I just got lucky both times.

With the deal Marstar are offering right now - a Chinese Military SKS for $75 if you buy a crate of ammo, you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal, and you'll get an excellent SKS, if this one is anything to go by.

Just my two bits worth...
:)

Then it's done I guess! Sounds like Ill be getting the Marstar deal. I just hope it will still be around in a couple of weeks when my PAL gets here!

The Chinese rifles were built and put directly into the crate. They were not issued or field tested. Some parts may not fit properly eg: too tight, misaligned, ect. Most of these fittings and adjustments can be done with a small file or emery cloth. Had these rifles been issued, some of them would have gone back for service corrections so they can be disassembled and reassembled properly in the field.

Nothing major, certainly not anything you would require a gunsmith for. I've adjusted magazine fitting, gas tubes, stock alterations, and removed some burrs from the receiver where the bolt slides closed.

I have both, but the deciding factor for me would be the chrome barrel on the chinese one.

The way I understand it, the chromed barrel is an advantage because it is rust resistant.
But the barrel is the easiest part to clean.
It still has to be taken down to clean the inards.
So maintenance wise, it doesn't offer much of an advantage.

For the value for money.....they are both fine pieces of equipment. They are a massed produced semi-automatic military firearm, extremely reliable, very easy to maintain and super cheap for the ammo....as for the accuracy....they are as accurate as the shooter. With open sights, you could expect a 1-3" grouping at 100 meters (if you take your time). At 200 meters you would be able to get within a 4-5" grouping. Past 300 meters, you'll need a scope, good eye and a little skill (and luck) to hit the taget the size of a torso :)

You won't be walking away with first prize in a beauty contest but by god, I guarantee you'll have a #### load of fun and fall in love with this rifle.
