RCBS Hand primer wear?

I have an RCBS hand priming tool that seems to have started not seating primers in all the way.
I've tried switching shell holders, and giving it the "double squeeze" but they all stick out about ten thou (10/1000) above the case head.
I did run them through the press and used the primer arm there to sink them to proper depth, but this extra step is a pain in the butt! I did check/clean the pockets, so that's not the issue.

Can the saddle the push rod in the hand primer wear out over the years? I've been using this one for about 20 years, and the problem is new.

I just measured mine and the small primer rod is 5-6 thousandths shorter than the large primer rod.

Very likely this is the cause of your troubles.

I had the same problem several years ago. Tried everything, nothing worked and I was ready to throw the piece of junk in the trash! Then I tried the other push rod and presto! Best hand primer you can buy! Worked perfectly ever since...
 
My old one did the same.

The metal of the cam is soft, and it wears.

Used plenty of synthetic grease on the second one, it is holding up better, though not getting much use since the bench mounted RCBS tool came on scene.
 
I seat once then turn 1/4 to 1/3 and get good results. When chambered there is a little circle etched into the primer from the firing pin hole so they are now seated to the bolt face.
 
I've been using the Lee hand primer for 4 or 5 years and I can not drive 300wsm primers home either but I can with every other cal., not enough stroke. Have to use my press for the 300wsm.
 
On my RCBS hand primer the primer rods are adjustable. You just push down the sliding sleave and screw the tip up and down. Mine is 20 years old thou, design may have changed. RCBS made it like that to adjust for cam wear and for different thickness shell holders.
 
There is no adjustment on mine. When it wore to the point where the primers were not fully seated, I just found a piece of round stock the right diameter and cut a new rod a hair longer than the original and it works fine again.
