Primer Diameters

I'm loading up some .44mag here and having a heck of a time seating my primers. Some go in nice but most are really tight. Would a different brand of primer make it easier or are all primers typically the same diameter. Currently using the CCI Large no.300.
 
I've typically found winchester primers a bit easier to seat when I run into brass with tight primer pockets. None of my current stock of primers is of new manufacture though.
 
I always find my 44 mag brass to have tight pockets, it seems to be worse with some brass makes, you can run a chamfer tool in the pocket a couple of turns and it will make a world of difference, I know its a lot more work but it sure cuts down the frustration... :)

I find cci primes to be the smallest of all of the brands so I don't think your make any headway changing primer makes...
 
i actually did chamfer a bunch of the primer pockets and that didn't really help much, but i have found a little trick that seems to work with the turret press

Well, don't share your trick after we offered some advice......
 
sorry about that, i just give the case a little twist while applying light pressure on the ram, it's almost like the primers aren't lining up correctly. Not that big of a deal since i don't plan on going through the .44 like one would with 9mm. I still get the odd impossible one and noticed it is typically the s&b that causes the most grief.
 
Is the brass new? If not, once, and many-fired brass can have primer pockets that vary slightly in size - enough to notice when seating a primer. As well, people who clean electrosonically and/or with chemicals, sometimes find that the brass gets "grabby" as a result.

Well then it may not be the brass or the primers. I would start looking at the press. Shellholder out of spec?

Well, if all the other ammo you create on your press works fine, then the only variable is the shellholder, especially suspect when primers seat easier when you "line them up".:)
 
rooky, i have never loaded for 44 mag, but for my 9mm, 38 special, and 357 magnum i have had the same problem with s&b and the odd winchester case, its gotten to the point that i seperate s&b brass from the rest and when i have enough i resize / deprime the cases, then swage all their primer pockets

for me that was the trick that worked
 
i noticed that there is not much of a lead-in on the primer pockets and the chamfer doesn't help a whole lot, perhaps a small radius will help better. I just tried some brass i picked up from the range and had no problems at all so swaging the stuff i have is probably what i need to do. Any tips on what swaging tool works the best?
