223 help.........

Have a .223 being constructed and I have one small question.

I would like to know what the outside diameter of a loaded round is at the neck using a Mic and not calipers.

This is using Win brass and 40gr Sierra BK's and or 30 or 40gr Bergers.

I want to order my die but need to know if the bushings at the local shop will work for what I need.

Well Dan if I had fired rounds it would be a no brainer but I do not have any. I do not even have the rifle yet.

There are enough guys shooting 223's around here that I thought someone would be able to tell what a loaded round mic's at with the above components would be. I just do not want to order bushings that I will not need for the Redding die.
 
I think Dan is trying to tell you that a custom rifle will require a custom fit. Fitting something using gun in the store might not work depending on how your smith cuts the neck.

Exactly, if they were all predictably going to be the same size, there wouldn't be so many options for bushing sizes. What will work great with a factory barrel, might be disappointing with a custom.

It appears I do not know anything about reloading when I can take 220 Russian brass,neck it up to 6mm neck turn it to give me a loaded round clearance of 3 thou in my CUSTOM CHAMBER ETC ETC.......................
 
I have Win brass, but none of the bullets you listed. Otherwise, I'd measure one of mine that I have neck-sized and reloaded.

If you want, I can mic a factory Win (White Box) round, or one of my reloads (using 55gr Sierra).

Take the bullet size (.224) + 2 x your turned neck thickness (.010 - .012 probably) and subtract the amount of neck retension you want (.001 - .003 typically), eg .224 + .022 - .002 = .244 all while making sure it has sufficient clearance in the chamber cut in your gun.

If you're not neck turning you're at the mercy of the brass manufacturers, number of times fired, stretched and trimmed.

I wonder if the original post was going......
Naa forget it, I dont have the patience to type out the rest of the question...

I wont bother deleting what Ive already typed, as someone may want to take an educated guess what I was going to ask.

On a side note, Ive taken 38 special brass, trimmed to length and placed a Speer 148 gr hollow base wad cutter behind 3 gr Bullseye and shot out of my 686. I just cant figure out how that flat nose gets forced into the barrel without distorting the bullet and tumbling to the target.
