Mods for my 870 express

As far as I know, it's a Remington barrel, it has Rem chokes, so I highly doubt it was cut!
...

Remington never produced 18" barrels with REMchokes. You may or may not have an 18" factory barrel, but the chokes were installed aftermarket.

Express barrels of late (bead blasted and blued) measure 18.5" in length and the earlier model parkerized Police barrels are 18".

If your barrel is NOT parkerized, it is not an 18" factory Police barrel and your barrel unfortunately would have been cut down when it was fitted for chokes.

... and how exactly are you measuring the length of your barrel?

Just an FYI, the barrel on my 2011 Marine Magnum is 18" and from what I hear, the new MM's are based on the Express "platform" with finishing differences only. However, as noted above, its Cylinder bore.

Actually yes they have, both 18" as well as 18.5". There are a number of special orders out there that have never been catalogued but are occasionally available on the open market. I've had both 16" (fixed modified) and 18" (RemChoke) factory Remington barrels in the past. The easiest way to tell is that the 18.5" end up flush with the Remington factory LE 2-rd mag extension while the 18" end up just slightly back from the end (about 1/2" - imagine that).

Having said that, the 18" Rem Choke barrel is pretty scarce and I'd imagine he has an 18.5" that he's measuring incorrectly...

So all in all according to those who answered the call for help, only the extractor is a liability and should be changed out. Shell follower works good on mine but they were changed for the color indicating empty magazine.

Mine is parkerized silver with black spots.
How should I measure the barrel?

Not sure what you mean by "parkerized silver". Parkerizing is a finish that usually ends up being grey to black, though a dull grey-green is also common on older mil arms.

Measure as follows - with the action closed, insert a rod or dowel down the barrel until it stops on the face of the bolt. mark at the muzzle, extract it and measure from the mark to the end that was onthe bolt face...

In that case it's grey.
The barrel length, doing the method told to me above, brings me to 18 9/16"

On the left side of the barrel there are markings that indicate the date the barrel was manufactured. A letter followed by a number. Unless the barrel was manufactured pre 1954, it would show a number followed by two letters.

Early Police Mag barrel were cut to 18" at the factory. 18.5" barrel were introduced with the Express Magnum models and their derivatives.

What is the number and two letters on your barrel?

What choke size is marked on the left side of the barrel if at all?

I was thinking of "production" barrels. Remington produced and still produces quantities of custom orders for MIL/LE/GOV if required.

I just don't see any of those orgs requesting a REMchoke barrel at that length when they can order a gun with any choke size they wish at any barrel length. Today's Police barrels are commonly MOD or IMP cylinder. Makes for better buckshot accountability.

There are some 14" and 18"/18.5" units out there threaded for breaching chokes which coincidentally also fit RemChoke.

REP in a circle near the chamber, CE stamped near the chamber, on the exterior, other than that it says Remington Arms Ilion blah blah, then a star after it says the 12 gauge 2 3/4 and 3 inch *

The code CE denotes your barrel was manufactured April 2010, or April 1984. CE was also designated for April 1958, but back then, shotguns were polished blued and only had 2-3/4" chambers.

Because your barrel has REMchokes installed and Remington only introduced the REMchoke system during 1986, it cannot have been manufactured in 1984 much less 1958.

In 1987, Remington introduced the lower cost Model 870 Express with an 18.5" barrel as opposed to earlier 18" parkerized barrels. Because your barrel is 18.5" long, it is a post 1987 barrel.

Because the barrel code on your barrel is CE denoting an April 2010 manufacture date, you do not have a parkerized Police barrel and the chokes were installed after its manufacture.

Also, the REMchoke system was installed on ventilated rib barrels. (26" and 28" only first year). Perhaps not exclusively, but it would be rare to find chokes installed on a short non-ventilated rib barrel measuring 18.5".

Are there choke markings on your barrel? CYL, or MOD, or IMP? If either of these markings exist on your barrel, the choke tubes were definitely added later.

No choke markings on the barrel, but I'm definitely happy it has them! Thanks for the info!
