Norinco M14 M-305B - Thoughts...?

Cant help you there....I am on a DND computer at the moment and a virus warning showed up and told me to contact the IT people ...dont know if I got a virus or not...probably just the stupid rickroll thing .
I just hope this dosn,t get my access to this site blocked from this computer.

no, it's 168 for target shooting( ie match) and 165 for hunting- you can go THE ODD TIME to 180, but a steady diet will damage your oprod - unless you have a sadlak piston installed - which is what i'm looking at, given all my other 308's shoot 180's

I feed mine a steady diet of 150 gr pills. I reload and in my rifle, their trajectory is a bit flatter than the factory rounds. The 150 is pretty hard hitting.

For 180 pills, I use my 30-06. it's kinda like a 308 150 gr pill on steroids! :D

Anyone have the Norinco M14? If so, what's your thoughts on it in terms of accuracy, reliability, handling etc, etc....?

If I get enough positive comments, I am buying one :)

The Main Battle Rifles forum doesn't haveenough of these threads to help you make that decision?

if you bump up to 165's, you'll see a whole new measure of accuracy as well as hitting power- sure, give up a few fps, but the 1/12 twist likes the 165-168 best of all- for 180s , i use my savage 99, just about everything else- the m14 is a great "stationary" rifle( i've got 4 of the things) but too darned heavy to tromp about with all day- now if you have a place that you can set up, put the bipod down, and sit for hours on end on your hernia pad, that's where she shines- i've seen pictures of a scoped m14 and a mag 58 side by side, along with a spotting scope in an isreali bunker-

Just a reminder, the Sadlak NM GROOVED piston is designed for usging 180gr and up. BUT it is designed and tested for USGI spec gas cylinders. It was not tested in chinese cylinders nor was it designed for chinese cylinder. Internal diameters of USGI cylinders as well as the internal volume of USGI pistons vary significantly from the chinese parts.
So if yer gonna bother using a sadlak piston, you are defeating the purpose by using it in a chinese cylinder.
But it's your rifle, your cash.
The design limit for max bullet weight for the USGI spec m14 platform is 174 gr.
We "assume" this is also true of the chinese and all other commercial variants/versions.

i wonder if you can match a usgi gas system directly with a chinese barrel, or do you need to do some monkeying?-

Doc correct me if I am wrong please.
If I was to use 180 grain or higher rounds. I can turn off my gas system and not cause any damage to my rifles operating system? Although it will be a straight pull design.

Yup just shut the gas off and its basically a manually operated semi...done it lots of times. HOWEVER it might be a bit tough to extract since you don't have the leverage like a bolt gun handle.

180 grains is the top end of the 308 anyway- any higher, and you have to seat the bullet so deep it's actually SITTING in the powder column, compressing it- unless you have a long magazine, then you can seat those long bullets out where they should be

Good point as it might be hard to manulaly operate the charging handel.

I was thinking about making some nice quite rounds for hunting. Alot of powder would be missing but I do understand that valid point of the lack of seating depth availble.
