hi can anyone tell me how to get the gas piston out of the shorty the bayo lug is blocking it.

Hey, that's a good question. I've never encountered this problem before (I like 22" NM barrels) and I'm hoping our shorty M14 lovers can chime in here!

This is an interesting problem.... I can visualize the need for a neutered(removed bayonet lug) flash suppressor like all those earlier Norinco M14's from Pre-2009 days!

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Barney

Good question. I think I'll just grind the lug off mine when it gets here.

My other shorty has a gas lock front sight so this has never been an issue before.

hopefully theres a solution i would hate to go grinding off parts on a brand new gun.

as for the flash hider, thats welded on isn't it? seems like a bit of a pain in the ass just to clean the gas system

i suppose if it comes to that, it's alot better than removing the flash hider every time

I don't think I want to mess with the front sight/flash suppressor every time I disassemble my rifle.

Me thinks it is a fact of life with that puppy. Don't see what the big deal is:confused: How often U gonna pull the piston?

M

it would be nice to get all the oil out of there the entire gun is soaked in oil

What? Grind the Bay lug off:eek: NOOOOOOOOOO.

The FH was designed to come off on a regular basis. I.E. The knurled castle nut and FH pliers.

What are U afraid will happen if you repeatedly remove and re-install it?

Besides, how often do U intend to to pull the piston?

M

what are these flash hider pliers you speak of? i havn't really figured out much so far about this gun.

This is whats going on mine(Sprinfield Armory Brake) ..just ordered it off the EE .
I have one on a different m-14 already . In the pic there are castle nut pliers I believe that is what the op meant .

Brownells sells this kit and just the pliers as well .

Hungry sells the pliers as well .....

They are called castle nut plyers. I'm on my BB so I can't post a pic but Google should be able to help you.

You will still have to break the welds on the flash hider. There are instructions on that in the M14 sticky IIRC and a few videos on YouTube as well.

Edit: what chalkriver said. ;-)

Not a big deal. Never have to unscrew the plug anyhow.

You do have to unscrew the gas plug.

You need to check/clean the gas piston. If you neglect to clean the gas piston, carbon builds up inside the piston. This means less area in the gas cylinder to expand into_Once the gas piston gets to built up inside with carbon, the rifle will "bark" when fired and recoil harder.............putting added stress on the cycling parts.

If you can find the Art Lupino M14 video, he goes into detail about the gas piston/cylinder and proper cleaning.he also shows you a fully clogged gas piston out of the rifle he is working on, and explains what happens when the piston is plugged........

You can get them through Brownells.......

You should be able to see two faint spot weld on the underside of the flash suppressor.

You simply drill those out enough so that the flash suppressor will "break free" when tapped off. Use a piece of wood against the FH and hit with a ballpeen hammer.if you are careful you can re-use the FH.

The how to is in the M14 tips/tricks sticky at the top of the page. You can also see it done in the 2004 Abbostford Hungry clinic video here:

i have a habit of breaking things like that haha, seems like the simple procedure of field stripping and cleaning is made much harder due to this problem. or maybe impossible if you're not willing to figure out how to remove the FH, kind of stupid that you need to order special pliers just to clean the gun.
