Hi To All,

New member here. Done a fair bit of shooting from pistol to long rifle, and decided to get a precision/hunting rifle for the far north. Intend to use my boat and hunt areas near to the shoreline, so weight and length weren't huge factors as I won't be slogging through the brush too much. Lots of open sloughs with the far sides anywhere out to 1000 metres. Chose the above rifle and ordered a Vortex PST (6-24 FFP) to go along. Was wondering if those of you who have the same or a similiar rifle would be willing to chime in with tips and comments. Everything I've read says accuracy should be less than 1/2 minute, and probably closer to 1/4. Other comments are that it's a bit of a club, but with a heavy 26" barrel, that's to be expected.

I've got one in 223. Very accurate, half moa not uncommon. Shot a 20 round 2.25" group @ 218 yards last trip out. Rifle is 11.25 lbs w/ 4.5-14x40 Vx3 LR

I'm not sure if I'd be pushing a 308 past 500 yards on game though

Hi Tod, thanks for the info. Past 500 will depend on my comfort level with the rifle. Going to have to get some experience with the rifle, ammo and scope. As I shoot throughout the winter I'll post the results. I've shot 223 with mil ammo well past 500, but that's a bit iffy, especially with low power tactical scopes with a massive post. Looking forward to having a nice fine set of crosshairs.

Hi To All,
Everything I've read says accuracy should be less than 1/2 minute, and probably closer to 1/4.

I would give it a quick try on paper off the bench. I still have not found the magic Savage (although I like em and keep buying them) that out of the box and in a field position shoots better than my 7600s. But then again I honestly cant shoot quarter MOA.

Got to appreciate that honesty Warren! I've been out of shooting for a couple of years (too busy with the family) so will have a bit of a return learning curve. At least this time, I'll have picked my rifle and scope, so it will suit me.

Don't get me wrong I think you picked a great rifle. I just think 1/4 MOA is hard to shoot with any factory rifle. The internet tells me different but I'm starting to wise up. :D

Good hunting.

Hi again All. I've been looking around for a ballistics chart for this rifle with no luck. Can't find anything on the Savage website. Maybe I'm blind. I can get generic info from the bullet manufacturers, and have used a couple of ballistics programs with a variety of inputs, but nothing specific to the rifle, and there is quite a bit of variation between/among the avail info, even with the same inputs. Any concrete data for any cartridge would be much appreciated. I will be using some form of factory load.

There won't be anything specific to the rifle other than personal experience of other users. The muzzle velocity of the specific projectile used, the weather conditions, and wind will be the inputs in any ballistic program you use. Some programs will use your location also, because your position on the earth will affect the bullet flight.

PS Welcome bro.....moose stew tomorrow!
