I'm pretty sure you can get ambidextrous charging handles. My AR has an ambi mag release and you can also get an ambi bolt release and selector. I fail to see how the Russians could improve on the design, other than make another ITAR exempt AR, which is an improvement in my books.
I refer to a cocking handle positioned as on the H&K G3 for example: in the logical, natural position that most closely corresponds to the position of the shooter's left hand when holding the rifle in a firing position.
I previously mentioned two other improvements they could make. Not necessary for civilians taking their black beauties out to the range for a spot of tacticool shooting, but for soldiers in cold climates...maybe not such a bad idea. H&K have already thought of this and the G36 carrying handle is large enough to actually get your hand in and out of in a hurry, with gloves on.
But if it doesn't have an optical sight built in like the G36, a folding carrying handle is probably better, as on the FN FAL. Soldiers don't carry their rifles "at the trail" much these days anyway, and unless an optical sight is incorporated into the handle at an appropriate height above the receiver, as on the H&K G36, all handles like the AR15 type do is get in the way of a proper scope mounting. Although looking at the photos above, I see they've made the handle removable so you can take it off and throw it away!
It's not like the Russians can't build good practical optics, but of course getting one of the optical companies to cooperate might be problematical, as they respond to the market with all the zip of a Galapagos tortoise.
Their pistol grip shape is an improvement, though not quite so "space ranger" stylish as the original!
