Well, we finally made it home Thursday night after nearly 36 hours in airplanes and airports. What an awesome adventure. We ended up hunting a very remote valley in the Tien Shan Mountains that very few westerners have ever seen. It was far from a normal Marco Polo hunt. It took basically five days of travel to reach the hunting area by vehicle and then on horseback. Once in the area we moved camp daily pushing ever deeper into mountains over high snow-choked passes and through rivers running high with glacial melt. We saw a crazy amount of sheep and Ibex and I managed to take a great trophy of each species. The hunt was far more challenging than I ever imagined and the people we hunted with were some of the best horsemen and mountain men I've had the pleasure of sharing a hunt with. While patience is definitely a virtue on a hunt like this where plans constantly change and the is a lot of hurry up and wait, the experience was incredible.

Talk about hunting at the top of the world! I hope you're going to post more details, involving travel, any difficulties or costs involved with the importing guns and ammo, which outfitters you used, weather, altitude of your base camp and hunting area, and of course the obligatory information concerning guns and loads, and the ranges you shot from. Congratulations on yet another wonderful experience.

I'll try to fill in a few details quickly.

We flew Calgary - Toronto, Toronto - Istambul, Istambul - Bishkek. Getting guns in and out of Kyrgyzstan was a breeze and cost nothing although getting ammo out was another thing so we just shot it all up after the hunt. No one there had seen a Rapid Z reticle so it got lots of attention and my remaining ammo didn't last long.....lol

We hunted between 10,000 and 12,500 feet and weather was +10 during the day and dipped to -12 during the night. Other than a blizzard the first couple days, we enjoyed bluebird skies.

I took my 270WSM shooting 130 grain GMX. I took my Marco Polo at around 250 yards and my ibex at 579 yards.

that is awesome. thanks. that is one of the hunts i want to do. i figure it would cost around $100k though, including a nice new car for the wife.

Absolutely amazing. How did you end up going to Kyrgyzstan and are you going to post more about your adventures there?

Hunting marco polo sheep has always been a dream of mine and after a couple years of taking on extra projects, I was able to make the commitment to go. Right now Kyrgyzstan offers some very affordable hunts for marco polo so it seemed to be the place to go. So many more stories but so much work to catch up on now that I'm home...lol

Looks like a nice hunt, you are about 500 km south east from where I work in Kazakhstan. You could have stopped by for a beer. ;)

If sheephunter doesn't mind a slight hijack. . .

What part of kazakhstan are you working in? Oil patch? I did some work for the Caspian Sea oil fields from here (not in Kz).
