Anyone hunting with a .357? I just picked up a H&R and was going to take it with me on a walk around the property looking for deer. Any suggestion on loads? factory or hand loads
MT Chambers makes a 190 gr SWC; its proven accurate and deep penetrating in my guns ahead of a stiff load of H-110. Sorry, I don't have my load data here.
I will use mine for the first time for antlerless mule deer this year. From what I've read everyone suggests to stay away from most hollow point ammo, jacketed flat points or hard cast gas check penetrate better, 158-180 grains seem to be the correct weight. I think we'll both do well if we keep shots under 100 yds or so. Good luck!
I carry/hunt with my Marlin 1894c with these reloads with Lil'Gun powder.
For small game RNFP 158 gr cast & some Red Dot, or Trailboss powder is fun.
As long as there is no open season for Moose, Deer & Bear I can use it for small game of course....
Six years ago i did kill a small buck ( 150 pounds ) with my Trapper 357 mag, it went down fast 150 feet shot, this is a very potent caliber for thick wood, if you limit your shot under 75 yards, you should be just fine... JP.
I think the cal. is good for deer if loaded with a heavy flat point cast bullet, lighter bullets may limit penetration and put this cal. into the same category as the 7.62X39, which is marginal on deer.
