Just looking for opinions on which would be better. A dedicated 9mm lower or do a conversion. It looks like I might be in the market for a lower since Canada Post lost mine in the mail.

IMHO, do a dedicated. Swapping uppers is nto as quick as it seems b/c you need to change the buffer, add a buffer spacer (or use a longer 9mm buffer from a custom maker), and in all liklihood you will need to change hammers unless you get your bolt moded to a ramped bolt and use an M16 hammer.

Lowers are inexpensive. Go dedicated - much more convenient.

FWIW, as a shameless plug, I'm selling a nice relaible 9mm AR in the EE right now with all the bugs worked out. You won't be able to build one as cheap.

Thre are other sellers as well - not just me.

The 9mm hammer and buffer work fine with the 223 bolt, and the mag well adapter takes seconds to install or remove. I've had several of both configurations and if I went with a dedicated 9mm lower, it would be one that takes Glock mags.

I started out converting, but soon bought a dedicated lower for 9mm(I just leave the conversion parts in it)

It all depends how much the 15min to convert vs the cost of a second lower is worth to you.

Sometimes the hieght of the magwell block can be finicky, so once you got it set just right, you can leave it.

AR9mm tend to blow alot of crap back in to the reciever, so its nice to keep them separate as well.

Komb, just courious. Does the bolt catch work on the 9m,Glk mag ARs?

I've never tried the clock mag lower. Mine were Colt, RRA, Armalite and Dlask... all standard mag well.

Why did it take you 15 min. to change over? I just left the 9mm hammer and buffer in, and just swapped the upper and put in the mag adapter. I took less than a minute.

Yeah, its less than 15min, but I never actually timed myself.

I did change the hammer, but you are right, the 9mm should work in both.

I use a buffer spacer so I just changed the buffer at the same time.( I have broke one bolt catch)

. . .

:agree: For the cost, it was worth it to me to use a dedicated platform.

Having run these for a good while, I have to disagree. a 9mm hammer in a 5.56 gun is a good way to get your hammer pin to egg out.

If you are swapping uppers regularly, I would recommend a ramped bolt and M16 type hammer.

No it will be left a 9mm. I have the upper, magwel and buffer and spring and hammer, I just don't have the lower. I bought one off the EE(first time purchase) a RRA 9mm marked lower and it has been MIA for the past month. But a postie just got busted here in Calgary so there might be a glimmer of hope that I might get it. I like the glock mag set up but I am already $300 into mags. I have a stripped nork lower but I don't want to use it as I already have one in 5.56. Maybe I could use it for now and see what happens with Canada Post.

A lower is just a receptacle to hold the fire control group - it contributes nothing to the shooting qualities of the rifle so long as it's reasonably in-spec.

Go ahead and use it until you get something better.
