I and a few buddies are planning to hike down the Bruce trail (Tobermory to Niagara Falls!!!) June 2012...anyone know what the weather is like In June up there? How bad are the bugs?

October is the best imo. I spend a lot of time on the Bruce and as previously stated, bugs can be a problem in the summer months, then again, I'm guessing that's the same in every part of Canada in the bush that time of year. Hard to look at the scenery when you're swattin at bugs the whole time. For the past couple years, I've been going on halloween weekend. Granted, if it rains, it's not pleasant, but if it stays clear you're laughin. Add to that, the trails will be packed in the summer, but you'll have a hard time running in to too many people at the end of october.
 
Thanks for the tips jlovie. Me and my 2 other buddies who will be doing this are all in College so we only have a 4 month window...May-August to do this.

Have you hiked the whole trail? If so how long did it take you?
 
I live in Niagara Falls and have a cottage in Tobermory....June is beautiful in NF, but just the start of summer in Tobermory. If you are swimming the water will be godawful cold still. Typical Southwest Ontario humidity will be in effect.

I have a cottage in Meaford, and have gone camping in Tobermory.

The water may be a bit chilly but the weather will be fine. Nothing to worry about. Happy Hiking...
 
surprisingly, Black flies and Deer flies are not as big as a problem in Bruce peninsula during the summer. More of a problem further south. Massasauga Rattlesnake on the other hand....:)

You are talking about 25 K a day, every day with a... say...50 pounds backpack each. Have fun. :cheers: I really envy you guys.
 
Mozzer, I envy you. I love it in Tobermory. I have a cottage on manitoulin but am always on the lookout for something on the mainland side.

I have done the whole trail, but never in one shot, so I can't comment on how long the whole trip would take. I can't remember if there's a forum for the Bruce Trail Association, but it might not hurt to look into that, there might be someone there that can give you a better idea on time lines.

I've heard of people taking 3 days to 7 days and more, depends on the group obviously. If you can spare an extra day or two, it'd be well worth it to really check out the scenery. I could spend a day just climbing around the rocks near the grotto. Speaking of the grotto, do yourself a favour and take the chimney down it. The first time I was there I came onto it from thewest trail and took a half hour to scale down to the pool. Just as I got down there, a 12 year old girl came down the chimney, giggled at the exhausted 25 year old and shot back up the chimney. Needless to say I took the chimney on my way out. (the chimney is a tunnel up through the rocks, it's a bit tight, so closturfobics beware)
 
Nice...the chimney sounds fun:). I am gonna see if we can take 40 days to do this...that we we can have days to rest and explore so we do not feel rushed. Our plan is to travel up to Tobermory that way we do not need a ride all the way back down the trail when we are done as we will be only a hour and half away from home when we are done the trail as we are all from London.
