Hi All,

I'm new to this website and I think it says somewhere in the fine print that you should make an introduction so here it is.

I used to shoot a fair bit of archery (amongst my gazillion other hobbies). I decided I might as well get my PAL in case I ever felt like buying my own gun instead of always tagging along with someone else who has them (my brother probably has enough for several people).

Well he doesn't currently have any handguns, so I figure I will start filling that void.

I am pretty set on getting a 9mm, I find it the most comfortable to shoot and it seems reasonably priced as far as ammo is concerned. I shopped/shot and found that feeling them up in a store really means nothing vs. actually shooting them. So I proceeded to try and shoot many more of them, with some good and some bad results. It does not seem like you can go all that wrong, especially for a noob because it seems you can get used to whatever you buy.

I was really leaning towards an HK P30L, but I think I will save myself the expense and just get a glock to start with.

I think that about sums up my introduction.

For just a little more than that glock you could get a CZ Shadow. It is an amazing gun. Look into it. I love mine. Then again there isn't anything wrong with a glock either, it's all about personal preferance. anyways welcome to CGN and enjoy filling your head with knowlege, while emptying your pocketbook on guns are related paraphenalia.

CZ Shadow. It is an amazing gun. Look into it.

I have shot the Shadow a fair amount. It is nice, but there are things about it that I don't like compared to the glock 17. I like the glock 17 and m&p9 for their low cost and innovative design. The m&p seems like an ergonomic answer to a glock, with the downside of having less tweak-ability/aftermarket support.

To add a bit to the picture here I have tried shooting the following:
Glock 17
S&W M&P9
HK USP
STI Trojan
CZ Shadow SP-01
Beretta 92FS
Jericho 941 (Baby Eagle)
Walther P99
Sig 226

For just a little more than that glock you could get a CZ Shadow.

Could I though? I disagree.

It seems to cost around $819 for a Shadow (that is the cheapest I have seen advertised). A Gen 4 glock is about $699. Also factor BC sales tax and GST, also known to us as HST ($83.88 for the glock, $98.28 on the Shadow).

So doing the math....

glock total: $782.88
shadow cost: $917.28
difference: $134.40

That makes the shadow just over %17 more expensive. And doesn't come with 3 mags!

It is a slippery slope once you say "what's another hundred dollars?". If I was to go the more expensive route I would probably buy the HK P30L it's like an ergonomically updated USP, which I thought was great (Standard, Full-frame) but kind of expensive and a bit big. Oddly enough those are within my 'budget', it's not that I can't afford it, I am just not sure that the cost is justified for me.

If I really wanted an all metal gun (alloy frame) I would probably get the Beretta 92FS ($749). Despite its dated style and overly large size, I seem to shoot as well with it as the Shadow.

I find with a lot of hobbies you don't really know what you will want until you have a lot of experience under your belt and your tastes change with your abilities. I think guns like the glock or m&p will get me in the door, and also allow me to try different things without too much trouble. The glock has some great options for customization.

I figure because of my lack of experience, and the fact that many people seem to be able to shoot quite well with a glock, I would like to try it. I think in the end it would make me a better shooter than to start with something as specific as the Shadow, which is sort of an "IPSC Production out-of-the-box" gun.

I appreciate the suggestion though; what do you like specifically about the Shadow. I do like the grip, the weight and the trigger action of it.

Sorry for the novel, but I have nothing goin' on at the moment...

lol apparently so. I'm in AB so no extra taxes, but my shadow was $835 taxes in and it DOES come with 3 mags. You can also use tangolgio mags in them that are all steel (no plastic basepad) and they are about $10 less than factory CZ mags.

Like I said before it's albout personal taste. I startred out with a polymer framed pistol and I did not like it. The shadow fits me nicely and I enjoy shooting it.

Just like the glock you can get any part you want for it aftermarket or stock and customise it to suit your needs.

Again I'm not saying that if you don't have a shadow you're not a real man, but.... maybe I am?

Lol I was just making a suggestion. there is a a reason soooo many people love the CZ and there is a reason sooo many poeple love the Glock. Go with what you like and shoot it! Have fun!

I appreciate the input. Who knows maybe one day I will grow up and become a real man, and when that day comes, so will a Shadow? LOL. It is a really nice gun and I do like it, there is nothing functionally that I don't like about it. I respect anyones decision for buying one.

To me, the finish looks too much like old diecast toys, especially for the price. The baby eagle/jericho 941 is very similar in finish (and oddly enough, mechanically). The weird semi-gloss finish doesn't help, the silver version looks even less appealing.

Since you mention Tanfoglio. I seriously considered Tanfoglio because they are pretty much the same guns and the pics on the Tanfoglio website make them look really appealing. I couldn't find anything in a store or on a shelf that would verify it's look/feel is good in person. All I found were the models I had no interest in. If someone from Tanfoglio/Freedom Ventures is listening, gets some guns on some shelves!

Yes a Glock is partially plastic, but plastic can be finished nicely just like metal can/could be.

Either way, I just bought a Gen 4 Glock 17 for $625 shipped off the EE with only 250rds through it. I can buy lots of ammo for the difference!

Nice! Now you and I BOTH need a 1911 in .45 and they we can get our man cards back! lol

I know it's a bit 'tacticool' but can I have one of these? (minus the mag-extension)

nope a "real" 1911 has no rail and says colt on the side! lol

I'm destined to live out my life with fake guns as a fake man :(

So 'real' man status can only be achieved via 1911 pistol built prior to 1912 since springfield armoury was manufacturing them alongside Colt sharing same serial number range. (I might not have my facts exact but a 'real' man can correct me)

In that case; I don't feel too bad since there aren't all that many 'real' men out there, especially in Canada.

I guess I could one up 'real' men and buy a Colt Single Action Army Revolver in .45 Colt? I think I could become even more real than real! :p

What would an intro thread be without some 1911/real-gun banter eh?

It would be boring and completely useless! lol
