UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

Without reading the portion of the law you're considering, since the modification makes the gun longer than OAL of 26 it should be ok, while leaving or returning it to factory specs is not considered a modification, and at factory specs was considered non-res, you should be ok.

That seems to be the accepted answer by the powers that be. (for now, god knows they change pretty regular :) )

You can't modify the gun so that it's still under 26 inches. Right now they're 24, so if you add a full stock you'd be over 26 and be perfectly legal. Putting the original stock on again later would also be fine. (no modification there, factory components).

Saw a guy shooting a ML in .44 Mag at Shooter's Choice that had a nylon pile "boot" designed for a golf putter filled over the stump.

He was getting "key hole" groups at 25 yards with the 225 grain Hornady LeveRevolution ammo.

Just tucked the stump under his chin and the thick nylon pile absorbed the recoil.

Looks like he had a pistol scope on the barrel.

Can't tell me that gun wouldn't pop a deer at 50 or even 100 yards.

I've been getting 'full stock accuracy' out of my 22 mare's leg doing that (no recoil issues obviously). Might be worth experimenting a little to try something like you suggest for the .44, for those times when you want to make a long shot.

I've also had some luck with my single point sling for adding a little stability.

With practice i'd say you're right - 100 yards or less should be achievable with the right sights and a few tricks and some practice. Without a doubt it has the horsepower to get the job done at that range. It's hitting a lot harder than a pistol would.

The .454 is a lengthened 45 colt case. You can't get the colt up there to it , but you can certainly beat the .44 mag with a colt. A hot loaded colt will get you about 1500fps with a 300gr bullet in the mares leg. No slouch

Expect to get questioned (or even worse) by LEOs in Quebec and Ontario when in possession of a Mare's Leg especially if you're carrying it in a leg holster.

I'd keep a copy of my old registration certificate even if the LGR is gone to help prove the gun is non-restricted.

Hope the ON and PQ CFOs and cops don't go into "payback is a #####" mode after losing their favorite toy the LGR as a reprisal for our activism. I certainly hope that Canadian democracy hasn't degenerated to that level.

Having said that I'd expect anything from the anti-democratic CACP.

If I get a ML I'm going to put a small pistol scope on it with Warne QD mounts if I can find them in Canada.

The Chiappa Takedown model has an octagonal barrel which can be easily drilled and tapped for a Picatinny rail.

The guy who had one at Shooter's Choice said he used a "boot" for a golf putter as a recoil pad that was already split and accommodated the lever of the gun without cutting.

I like the Takedown because it can be carried in a locked small business brief case like a handgun except you don't need an ATT or ATC and you can hunt with it.

I'll put a cable trigger lock on the gun to be doubly safe if I meet a charge happy LEO.

Oh I know, the trigger lock - woos thing again. ;)

Cool idea. - here's the product you want for the rossi ML barrel, simple to get a smith to tap it for you:

I don't golf, but i'll look into that. Not hard to come up with a few other similar ideas if I can't find one i'd guess.

Or you could just whack him with that golf club :D

I've had good luck and bad luck with take down guns in general so i'm a hair leery of them - but you're right, it's awesome to have something so portable yet hunt-legal :)

Wanstalls is nice enough to include a printout of the FRT with purchase of the Mares leg. Yup, they're that awesome at Wanstalls. :D

Now that is nice - I'd photocopy and laminate a couple of those if I had one for sure. Have a few in a ziplock to give your local CO or LEO to take home with him as a consolation prize for not getting to take home the gun itself:D

Gary, what's the chances of getting this in? My Ranch hand is incomplete and needs one badly. How did it live this long without one?

It's already come in handy with a over zealous range officer telling me I had a prohib "sawed off". I calmy ceased fire and proceeded to take it out of the case and present it to him, and went back to sighting in while he read. After that he was really excited to get a better look. Fun to show it off, yet kind of an annoyance when I'm attempting to get it sighted in.

Kiss

It's a simple acronym ... why gunk-up a simple/cool/compact little firearm?

I already know the answer. "Because I can."

I'm gonna gunk mine up with a small red dot with quick detach-ability option and an extra rail for a light/laser.

Here's a real gunker!

LOL - unless you're being sarcastic it's a 15 dollar part, you can probably order it direct. Well under the 100 dollar limit for exports to require a permit.

I'd be leery of trying anything too hot in the Mare's leg. Even moderately warm loads that don't really thump that bad in the Marlin, sting the hands when I shoot them out of the Ranch Hand.
