I was amazed at the new imported batch of 18.5" Canada Ammo (Have I got that right?) M14's today. Wow did it shoot pretty well at 100m to 500m distances. Better than I expected with his milsurp ammo.

I'm hoping ChalkRiver will chime in here with his range report and some pictures. Maybe he's still unloading his car in the driveway now.

You were right Hungry , on the 3.5 drive home I kept seeing the image of the orange indicator on my last target ...
Center of visable mass ...500 yards with Garand sights...OH ya !!

This guy that was there had something to do with it though ;)

The rifle worked flawlessly except when I wimped out on the mag change and didnt seat it correctly. The dimensions of the receiver are different than my two polytechs as it didnt work in my USGI fiberglass stock. so I used the original stock instead
The taller front sight proved itself .After zeroing at 100 it was only 1 click from the bottom .
The original rear sights I put on a different rifle after I got them to work correctly ( for now..lol)

I just could not get over the fact that at 400m we were beginning to play with the wind. I was wondering if the shorter barrel was contributing to any (real or perceived) velocity loss and drop in performance. NOT at all. At 400m and 500m that rifle began shooting predictably well with the varying winds and then we found that wind pattern and began playing with it. That's all we needed to do, I was pleased.

CanAm... would I recommend people to buy one? HELL NO! Buy TWO of them!

Chalkriver... yak about those sights that you swapped out on that shorty! And also having a high front post helps things from 100m to 500m. Not sure if you zombie killers out there with the Canada Ammo shorty(ies) are planning on shooting past 100 mikes, but now you know they can if prepared correctly by Chalkriver. He took that shorty to the "next level" AFAI am concerned.

If you M14 addicts are sitting on the fence about those shorty(ies) rifles, feel free to get one or two of them. These rifles sure PING nicely on the firing line! :D

As Hungry said before , get a set of Garand rear sights .
They are a must have item for the people who want to just use the iron sights .
One set of Norinco sights imploded on the day we were shooting , more proof that alot of them are not up to the standard set by the Garand sights.

After setting them up correctly and putting my glasses on to read the numbers :) .....they were bang on for adjusting elevation and windage .
The sights and rifle performed better than I did all day. After going over the shorty all that has been done to it is I added a Op rod guide spring from Sean Rauch and the Garand sights.

Thanks again Hungry , it was a great weekend and it far exceeded my expectations .
It is turning out to be an expensive weekend as now I have to get that Biothane sling from turner Saddlery , and a S&W M&P 9 !! Agrubin let me try his out so now I have to have one of those too dammit ...Thanks again by the way :)

Yes, it was sweet to watch those shorties put lead downrange and on target! Hell, it was sweet shooting my standard length Norc out to 500...iron sights and with a sling! Thanks for those wind calls, Hungry! Anyone who has any doubts as to the accuracy of a Norc needs to get out more.

Tap, tap, tap! Shoot better!!!

Pics and info was emailed out guys , Steve H send me your email address again as it keeps coming back as undeliverable

Great weekend , Thanks again to Hungry , Agrubin and Millcun :)

where does one get a set of garand sights?

I bought mine from "Andy" in Italy but I heard he may be sold out , keep looking on the E.E I guess is your best bet .
IIRC - Brownells sells USGI the elevation and windage knobs and aperature $$$$$
( Elev knob $43.68 , rear aperature $11.25 and windage knob $31.25 plus shipping) those are the parts in the Chinese sights that fail .
The aperature in some Chinese sights are not centered but the good news is that the bases and covers are good enough :)

I haven't shot my CanAm shorty to that distance yet but I pumped off 80 quick rounds yesterday and couldn't believe how little recoil and how smooth these rifles are! My 1000 rounds are arriving tomorrow. CanAm seriously hit the ball out of the park with this deal. Customer for life here!

BTW Barney I need to take a clinic! I have two M14 shorties now and very little knowledge. I have one scoped with the CASM mount/10x mildot and the CanAm one I put the Ultimak scout mount with a Sparc red dot for deer hunting this month. :)

I now see what all the hype surrounding these rifles is about. Funner than my SKSes and I would say tie with my M4. :)

Yes, I will be in AB this summer. Let's not talk about it here. That's not good form. Visit me at : w ww.m14hungry.com

Planning another road trip out west. Time to visit BC with my M14 tools. Last time I stayed in Calgary for TWO clinics at TSE.

Okay, back to how the shorty shoots at 500m.

I'm still amazed at what that bear gitter M14 from Canada Ammo can do once you improve the Norc sights. Chalkriver says that at 100m, his aperture was ONLY one click from bottoming out. Added 2 MOA or 2 kliks to get to the 200m mound. :D

That is freakin' awesome. Makes me wanna take this shorty hunting deer/bear/moose/zombies !

I am really impressed with the shorty , the ammo and rifle deal was fantastic.
The rifle after a bit of tweaking and a rear sight upgrade is a nice piece of kit. With the help of Hungry I was making hits a heck of alot further than I expected to be`.
I have 2 polytechs and my Shorty was finished a little nicer at the factory than they were .
Get a good op rod spring guide , tighten up the op rod guide if required .
Adding shims if required isnt too hard either.
I pounded off two of my flashiders and a few others were done as well that day.
Then add a shim ot two and your good to go.

Ya hungry my sights are set up like this
1 click from bottom at 100
3 clicks from bottom at 200 ( 200 meters add 2 clicks)
6 clicks from bottom at 300 ( 300 meters add 3 clicks)
10 clicks ........ .. ... at 400 (400 meters add 4 clicks)
15 clicks ............... at 500 (500 meters add 5 clicks)

The formula worked just like you said it would , the elev dial was set at exactly 5 when I was getting the hits :)

Glad to help out. I finally got that EBR stock fitted. Only a day late...
