I really like the ideas and info being shared here....I acquired an old 870 Wingmaster...for free. It has a 30-inch barrel. I wish to take it apart, rebuild, perhaps Armcoat. Most who tackle this kind of project usually go shorter with an 18 inch or shorter barrel. I know I can cut my barrel to 18 inches or buy a shorter barrel, but am toying with keeping a longer barrel, installing a longer extension tube, and then cutting the barrel just past the extension tube.

What is max length of extension tube I can install to make this a high cap slug/buckshot chucker? Any pics out there of shotties with long extensions?? Where can I get longer extension tubes? Any limitations?

Lots of room on the Prairies to swing a longer barrel!!!

Cheers!

Keep the long barrel. Get a custom length extension. No cutting required if you do that. You should be able to fit about 10 in the magazine. Casey at Tactical Ordnance can make you the extension to any length you want.

I would do some checking before cutting, you can legally install a shorter barrel if it was made to that lenth by the manufacture, but it is illegal to "cut" a barrel to lenth.
I think you can have a barrel made to the lenth you want, but that cost $$$i ran into this with my maverick, hated the "overbite" of the barrel to mag tube,
it might be easiest to mod a mag tube extenstion, say cut two and weld back together, even if the tube was just for show it would look awsome!....good luck

One more time for good measure. d:h:

You can cut a manual action non restricted firearm (shotgun in this case) to 18" AS LONG AS the overall length remains greater than 26"

You can cut a semi to 18.5" AS LONG AS the overall length remains greater than 26"

Also there is no limit (other than for migratory bird hunting) on the amount of shells a manual action (pump lever or bolt) shotgun can hold. But a semi must be pinned to 5.

So to the OP cut away if you'd like but don't cut shorter than 18". Most guys will cut 18.5 or 19" for that "just in case I F up" factor.

I cut my Wingmaster down to 19 7/8" I believe it was. However, I was working with a vent rib barrel and had to cut it at the closest point where the rib met the barrel for it all to look acceptable. If I really want it shorter, I'll take my magazine extension off and buy a 14" barrel for it.

I would like to reiterate that, as mentioned, I CANNOT CUT MY BARREL PAST 18", but I can buy one MANUFACTURED to that length.

Thanks for pointing out the being able to buy a barrel thats less than 18" part. I forgot that in my post.

I purchased and old 870 Wingmaster 30"

Cut the Barrel to 28"

Bought the longest extension tube from TacStar (Total 10+1)

Dipped in Lacquer Thinner
Sandblasted with 80 Grit Aluminum Oxide
Coated w/Duracoat Extreme Grey

Whoa

What is the weight of that puppy fully loaded?
I have actually seen 3 gun guys with the mag tube sticking out past the end of the barrel. Maybe someone could make a 10+1 on a 12.5" 870. To cut down on weight.:D

Beautiful shotgun. Looks like a tower shotgun for a Federal prison guard. You might need a clamp for the end of barrel/mag tube. It could get damaged if you bumped it into something with a full mag.
