I got to witness a new Shorty at 100m to 500m Today

Dammit Barney! Now I really have to get one!

I believe that the shorter barrel has less whipping and must be stiffer than the 22". I guess I'll have to find out in SR next year and see how it will perform.

CanAm my order is coming up tonight.

Ya hungry my sights are set up like this
1 click from bottom at 100
3 clicks from bottom at 200 ( 200 meters add 2 clicks)
6 clicks from bottom at 300 ( 300 meters add 3 clicks)
10 clicks ........ .. ... at 400 (400 meters add 4 clicks)
15 clicks ............... at 500 (500 meters add 5 clicks)

The formula worked just like you said it would , the elev dial was set at exactly 5 when I was getting the hits :)

Thats easy to remember, the number of clicks makes sense. From my 100m zero my garand sights go:

+2 for 200
+2 more for 300
+2 more for 400
+11 more for 500 !?

What's the difference do you think?

It could be the barrel length as I was using the Shorty from Canam it has manufactured it with the front sight blade higher due to the barrel length.

I received 2 of the shorty M305's from CanAm and neither one has a higher blade in the front sight. I wonder if that will be an issue sighting in with the shorter barrel?

I believe you may have more clicks from bottom when zeroed at 100 m is all.
If a low front sight is areal problem you can glue a piece of a plastic zap strap on top of the front sight blade and then trim it with a razor blade on the sides of the front blade to size.
This will give you a taller front sight cheap :)

The main thing is to have rear sights that will have nice positive precise clicks when adjusting up and down and left and right .
The Chinese rear sights have a bad habit of turning to mush .

Good cheap fix on the front sight if needed. I have an Italian Garand rear sight sitting in my parts bin for my M14Doc special. I may need to find another one :)

If you are firing a rifle with sight radius and height unfamaliar to you, you can try a good sight height calculator as a solid starting point, to put everything into perspective. I believe Brownell's site has one. Again, only confirming at actual distances, is the only truly accurate way.

Great review on the shorty Chalk River,.......now I'm feeling the Poly fever starting again. I thought once you got your shot(buying one), you'd never get it again.:)

You have to remember this is a battle rifle and in no way a shiny new hunting rig .
It has the parkerized finish and the edges of the stock should be smoothed out a bit . Its no prom queen by any stretch but I am still very impressed with these rifles in general and my new Shorty was finished a little nicer than my other 2 2009 Polytechs.
I just read a short reveiw Hungry gave and it sounds like the 2 he looked at impressed him .... and he,s the man :D

I am sure you will really enjoy yours but they may need a little tweaking in spots but those issues can be easily sorted out :)
The rear sights on mine were better than the 2 that came on the Polytechs so yours may be Ok but that is one of the weak points of the rifle. Get a set of Garand rear sights if you plan on using the irons .

Just one question, if it has been asked my apologies. What type of ammo were you using Chalkriver? Thank-you in advance for the response.

With an avatar like that I cant refuse any request you make..lol
I was with the Regiment along time ago ;)

The ammo was around just when I signed up mid 70,s IVI ball ammo .
The hits I made had alot to do with the guy on the spotting scope .

Well unfortunately I missed the Regiment (joined in 97). I did enjoy the Para COY however.
Well I received my shorty from Canammo (thank-you) and I am currently waiting on a Troy battle rail and Mark4 3.5x10 that is in the mail, hopefully it will be a solid setup. I got the ammo deal so I will see how the chinese ammo shoots and go from there, but the rifle sounds good so far. Except that I got an ear full from an RSM when he found out I bought Chinese and not a Springfield (he's also my firearms dealer).
I've seen a few of those patches in my time. Not too many kickin around anymore. I think about it every day, and ask myself when will our government correct one of the biggest mistakes made in our military history and bring back our beloved AIRBORNE REGIMENT. You don't send Airborne troops (trained killers)on a goddamn peace keeping mission!!!!!!
Sorry just a little sensitive, lets keep this thread on track.

I got my shorty out today, a quick sight in(irons) at 50m then nailed the 300m gong!(after a few attempts) I have almost no rifle experience so I was impressed. Some of the other guys I was with seemed to be able to hit it whenever they wanted with their shorty and a red dot. I didn't bother trying to measure groups today because I just wanted to hit that gong.
