Best Out of the Box?

A couple years back I was very active in target rifle shooting and started getting into F-Class, however life caught up to me and I had to back out.

I'm now looking to get back into it, and was wondering what a great first F-Class rife would be, preferably the best "out of box" option.
Back when I was looking a few years ago, the Savage 12 F/TR and the Savage 12 F-Class looked to be the best options. Now looking at the Savage website there seems to be a few new options!

Just wondering what folks thought about this around here.

I hear the PGW Coyote is pretty darn accurate out of the box ;)

I think any of the savage's that come with that single shot target action and the accutrigger would be a pretty decent rig to start with.

If you are thinking of that type of price point, I would just build one off a Stevens action.

And you get to make the specs as you want. Likely shoot better too.

See my website for articles on how to put such a rifle together.

Or you can pm or email me.

So much depends upon your budget and the intended application. IMO the best out of the box rifle that will perform the double-duty of being a rifle you can compete in F/TR and Tac-Rifle is the Sako TRG. If you want to stay F/TR only and have no need of a repeater then I would recommend the Savage F/TR rifle as a very good place to start and, price wise, such a choice would be less than half the price of a TRG.

As jerry said, if that is your price point then a semi-custom based on a stevens action would be your best bet. The f/tr probably wont fit you and you never know if you'll get a good barrel or not. With a stevens you get you choose your stock and you'll have a much better chance at finding a hummer of a barrel with a shilen pre-fit barrel, plus if you shoot your barrel out you could easily order another barrel chambered with the same reamer.

Have to agree with Jerry if you want one to build on the stevens 200 is the cheapest.
If you want to compete get the savage ftr.

There is a guy I know who has a savage f-class in 6br and he has done very well this year .

Thanks all the help, sent Jerry a PM.

My thinking for going with something out of the box like the Savage's was because I have never really custom built a rifle. That said, depending on the amount of skill required (ie. do you need to be a gunsmith?) then I'd be happy to give it a try.

I'm willing to throw a little money at this, no point on being cheap. But I also need to purchase reloading equip, optics, etc. Also I have the Ruger SR1911 in my sights :p

What caliber are you thinking of getting?

Also, nice thing about Savage is it is perfect for the kitchen table gunsmith. Very few tools needed and you can do it all yourself.

Well, I have a bunch of .308 brass lying around so for reloading that might make sense. But I've always liked the idea of 6.5 x .284

Yep, competition. I used to compete TR, and did 2 F-Class shoots, so now I'm thinking F-Class full time.

I'm now looking at .260 Rem, looks like a great caliber.

Also what do people think of the Savage 12 Long Range Precision?

I'm loving my .260 Rem for precision rifle game after over 20 years of shooting the .308 Win baby. :D

You cannot go wrong with the Savage family for FClass....
