What distance are you comfortable iin shooting deer

Not many deer around here, but caribou might be considered similar. If I've been shooting my .30/06 regularly, and given a solid slung up position, prone or sitting, 300 isn't out of the question; but everything would have to be right. On demand under any circumstances, 150-200 is more like it, given typical late season weather.
 
I'll be 1st to admit that with my eyes anymore open sites just don't cut it.
I do use a peep sited rifle on chases.
I would limit my shots to 100 yds...maybe 150 if I can find a good rest & have time, but it's more if I feel I can make the shot once I put the sites on it.
 
These days, 30-30 Winchester with William's FP receiver and a front Foresite, about 125 yards maximum under good light. And I would still use my rangefinder first, to confirm distance though. Age has taken it's toll on my eyesight in the last few years.
Strongly suspect if I used the 44 Magnum carbine, I would tend to keep this use at under 100 yards.
 
You are right Brutus but me what i like is the big stumping sound a 44 mag does when you it the deer, very excusive to that caliber, you know it is dead and 100 metres would be the max even for a scope 44... it have a nice rainbow trajectory... JP.
 
I have set my personal limit with my Garand at 200yds. I can shoot 1.5MOA at that range off a rest, so a deer is large enough that I am fine with it from prone or with a tree or fencepost to use as a rest.

With my M38 Swede Mauser it is more like 150yds, as the issue sights don't work as well for my eyes as the Garand's aperture sights. I haven't hunted with it yet, but my limit will also be around 150yds with my K31, same deal on the sights.

All that said, I have never shot a deer at much over 100yds in the area I am hunting so it has been a moot point so far.

With the enfield, maybe 100m; my iron sights are off and shoot very high (nothing I can do to fix it without buying a new front site post which is very hard to find for a enfield 1913 #3)
wiith the SKS, 150m the site always seem to be +/-4 inches in any given direction till the barrel warms up, then I have no issue picking off a tall boy can at 100m.

beyond 150m I don't think my eyes could make a 100% positive identification for species.
 
I normally use either a Lee Enfield No.4 with a scope or lately a Handi-Rifle that doesn't have iron sights, so I'm only extrapolating from those, but although I'm confident with these out to 200m, if conditions are good, I prefer to get within 100m and if I had to give up the scope I would stick to 100m.

If they get closer than the muzzle, I'll try to back off a bit so I don't get their blood or sh*t on my boots or get hit with a flailing leg or antler as they fall.

using irons ican put my 303 or 30-30 into a coffee can lid at 115yds standing with a tree rest maybe 160yds, but thats it, 30-30 sight radius too short and 303 trigger has like an inch of creep.
 
I'd shoot my peep sighted levers to 150m max with a rest. Maybe 100m standing. I shoot a .30-30 and a .44.
 
Usually blow at least one deers head off every year, farthest i'd go on those shots is 80 yards...I shoot coffee cans at 200 free hand so ill say 200 with my 760 308 with irons...Fast gun too love it!

I only own the 760 so its a gotta be good with what ya got kinda thing :p

After having said this out loud, I shot a large mulie doe last saturday at a paced 208yds, offhand with my Garand. First shot hit towards the back of the ribcage and turned torwards the tail, opening the stomach up. Second shot went straight through the heart and she collapsed on the spot.

Conditions were perfect, with a standing broadside shot, a calm, sunny day, sun behind me and a snow covered hill behind her to provide perfect contrast.

It makes me chuckle when people describe rifles achieving XYZ moa at ABC distance. Moa is the same at any distnce I think its group size you mean as moa is measured as group size at 100 yds and it mathematically increases with distance but the figure is the same. Moa being 1 inch at w00 yds ergo 2 inches at 200 yards. Good result with the M1, soft point feed ok? Much damage/spillage from the stomach?
