Does anyone know if the receiver is the same on a Cooey 840 between 410 and 12 gauge? I have a chance to pick one up cheap, but the original 410 barrel is toast and I may have a used 12 gauge one available.
There are no markings on the receiver itself, just on the barrel.
 
Short answer no, long answer maybe. I didn't try a 12 gauge 840 on the .410 receiver but I tried a 16 gauge. The barrel fit on the receiver but the .410 forearm would not work. It needed the 16 gauge forearm. I tried a 12 gauge from a 37A and the barrel would not fit the .410 receiver. Of course even with the 16 gauge on the .410, I do not know if it will actually fire and eject. So unless the gun is close by where you could actually try it, I would not bother.
When you say you can pick a receiver up cheap, what is cheap. You can buy many used complete 12 gauges for around $100.00 give or take.

Well after much Googling I have discovered that the model 84 and later 840 used the same receiver for all gauges, just the 410 fore end is different.
This one is 410, so I would need a barrel and fore end if I were to change to something larger.
The gun would be basically free, I would just be saving it from going to the smelter, but I'm not sure if I want to get involved with this one or not. Her hubby had fallen while hunting, bent the barrel, and wrongly interpreted the law on barrel length vs overall length.
I doubt there is any way to legally add a few inches to a barrel, at least with our retarded laws.
 
Even though the receivers were the same, it is just as it is with double barrels. Sometimes a barrel from another gun will fit with no problems and other times they require fitting. Only way to know for sure is to try it, but as stated, you will need the 12 gauge forearm.
