Apparently laws in NZ have changed regarding handguns. I am currently reading a book written in the 90s about handgun hunting written by an American. One of the chapters involves his handgun hunts in NZ with a friend who also came to the USA and hunted with the writer.

Thanks for the hunting story above and all the info.;)

My thoughts are we gun owners need our own country where we can make the laws regarding ownership/possession/uses of guns. And choose a place where there is plenty of wilderness and temps never get below freezing...LOL.

Thanks for reminding me of how stupid our Canadian gun laws are; hunting with an FAL.
Next time maybe something shorter, full auto with a can:kickInTheNuts:

I seem to recall reading/hearing that in order to import a military lookalike semi auto, you have to surrender one for destruction. So you could bring in a Tavor, but you would have to loose an SKS or whatever to do so.
Correct?

yes and no.

it is a "policy" of the NZ police that the number of E cats in the country be kept under a falling roof, the number can drop but they will do what they can to prevent it from increasing.



it has been a policy of the NZ police for a 1:1 surrender of parts and rifles as a requirement for a import permit for rifles or parts for the past 17+years. the problem is this is "policy" Not LAW until 2009 the police were enforcing policy as law. until they changed policy as to what was included as a Military pattern free standing pistol grip to include closed pistol grips (like found on a Dragonov or SVD) and thumb hole stocks. this was challenged in the high court and the police lost in 2010. since then the police have been very careful as to what they put into writing as the 1 for 1 surrendering for import permits (which are free by law) applies only to E cats not to anything else not to collectors pieces (which are full auto and active) pistols or standard firearms. these policy's have recently been brought to light in the Government. so for now some are still surrendering firearms others have managed to do so with out the surrender.

I don't feel better. I'd love to see high capacity mags come back, take restrictions off ARs and allow us to carry handguns, then I will feel 100% better! :D R:d:
 
and then there are those of us that couldn't care less if you can hunt with an AR I'll fight for your rights to do so though.

Reason I couldn't care less if you can hunt with an AR is firstly I don't really like the rifle and secondly I hunt with an RA XCR-L in 6.8SPC so would never lower my standards and get an AR... :p

I would love to get my hands on a suppressor though...

to get the E cat there are only two ways:
1 working for the Government in the animal control area (goat and deer culling) 2. be a member of a gun club that uses them. you need 2 referees in addition to the 2 from your standard license these 2 must all ready have the same endorsement as the one you are applying for and have known you for more than 2 years (you only tend to find these people in the two places stated above) and you must up grade your security to a safe with a 6mm steel wall thickness with to diferently keyed locks which has 2 10mm or thicker bolts going into concrete or 2 of the same going into a steel plate under the floor the plate must be greater in surface area than the floor of the safe the bolts must be welded to the nuts under it and the nuts to the plate also 2 10mm bolts or screws into the wall studs behind the safe.

do that and you can have anything in any configuration so long as it is not select fire.

on the application it asks "what do you want the endorsed license for" we fill this in with everything we can think of including, sports shooting, service rifle, target shooting, plinking, animal control and hunting E cat you can take hunting but it is a offence for anyone with out the correct endorsement to handle a E endorsed firearm (handle meaning touch one) where as Pistols and A cat arms may be handled and used by anyone so long as under direct supervision of someone with the correct class of license Pistols can not be use out side of a designated pistol range

Some of us can. :) However we still can't shoot them. :(

I've shot both AR and FN suppressed and would choose the AR in a heartbeat. The FN is difficult to get below the hearing safe limit because its piston gas system vents high pressure gas to the atmosphere.

The best solution would be a suppressed AR in 300 Whisper. That gives you .30 caliber wounding potential with 9mm sound characteristics.
