Hi everyone.

I'd like to purchase a shotgun, however I've never had one so I dont know much about them.

I primarily want it for clays shooting. Now I've never done any so I dont know what type. However I live near a club (Vancouver gun club) that has all sorts of clays so I want to give it a go.

Other things:

  • cheap, reliable and low bling quotient (ie no mossberg 500 mariner please :)) ideally the classic black shotgun.
  • good camping gun - good for plinking
  • choke or no choke? I understand you can fire slugs from choked barels
  • 12 gauge?

What would you guys recommend in around $400 range?

Thanks

I woud save up a bit more coin and get a Stoeger Condor over and under not much more than what you are looking to spend and very versatile...

Hmm thanks superbad.
Is this a pump? Also, I forgot to mention that I'm not a hunter. This is going to be purely a fun gun.

It is an over and under... has two barrels... you can also buy other chokes to put in those barrels (they screw in and out).... Over and under are the most traditionally used guns for skeet.... but some folks like to use pumps or semi auto.... If you like a pump then you could buy a Remington 870 express... I have had one for years and liek it... very versatile and also has interchangeable chokes.... and is under 400 at cabelas.... or anywhere else...

^^ Agreed.

I was going to say the Rem 870, there's a few of them floating around the EE section.

Great for shooting trap or skeet and then changing the choke and going hunting

I see a lot of over and under shotgun on the firing line when shooting clays some of em even cost thousands of dollars. For me, I hate them. About the time I get into my second box of hulls my shoulder is black and blue and every time I pull the trigger it hurts so F###ken bad I can't hit anything. They just kick the hell out of me. Some folks love the over and under, for me they just don't work. I would go with a Browning BPS. 12. The fit and finish is as good as any 3000 dollar custom rifle and they always shoot. I would stay anything from anything Remington if it is brand new. Lately their CQ is gone down the tubes and you never know if you are buying a firearm that will function flawless or even cycle at all. From what I am hearing Remington has decided not to deal at all with quality control issues and they are shipping weapons with major issues. I was speaking with my local gun dealer a while ago and He said that every Remington that they receive from the factory has to be inspected and many of them never reach the counter as they have to be shipped back to the factory as they are unsellable because of factory defects.

No doubt hands down that Browning is the nicer and better gun.... but he said 400 dollars.... and I hate mossbergs....

Like I said... I would go with the over under... if recoil is an issue just buy an aftermarket pad....

I am calling BS on this. If there were a 10% warranty return rate, the company would be broke and dealers would be canceling their contracts. Law enforcement agencies would be suing them and canceling contracts. So far as I can tell, the 870 is still the most popular shotgun EVER. I doubt the design or manufacturing process has changed much recently.

The way you make it sound, I picture a board meeting where Remington's executives sit around with cigars and brandy snifters thinking how they can run the company into the ground: "I know, let's double our bonuses and lay off all the quality control staff. We just won't pay attention to that at all". Get real.

In the past month, I've seen threads reporting QC issues with Sigs, Remington, Ruger, S&W, and High Standard. If these threads are to be believed, the only company not experiencing QC issues is Norinco...

People get lemons. Its a manufactured product with many moving parts which all take abuse of some sort. It must be absolutely reliable. A 1 out of 1000 defect rate would probably be within spec.

Well said.... and saw NO complaints until stupid CBS article on the 700 safety... all of a sudden Rem is crap.... are we all going to start believeing the media that is trying to cut our hobby down?

I would recommend the WeatherBy Pa-08 its alot like the 870 .. I had a choice between the two and took the weatherby... Can get the gun in black, pump action, 12 gauge, changable chokes.. fires both 2 2/3 and 3 inch shells and perfect for clays all for 400 bucks sometimes cheaper...

thats what mine looks like

WOW!.... first time i ever saw someone on a gun forum that bought one of these... I have a lot of respect for weatherby... thanks for the review... OP... these may be a viable option if you like pump guns.... My suggestion is to go to your local or whatever and see which one fits you best....

If you want a "plain jane" shotgun, that can take being kicked around a camp site, is pump action, dirt cheap and more reliable than death or taxes, I don't think you can go wrong with a Maverick 88.

It's "all black", synthetic stock, based on a Mossberg action, easily changed barrels for different needs, lightweight, the list goes on ... I've had mine for over 20 years now without a single fail or repair.

You can usually pick them up for around $200 new. Which leaves you another $200 for ammo :D

Lots of options out there but i would suggest against the Remington 870, my brother has one and he loves it but it Jam's way more then the mossberg 590.
WeatherBy would be my choice considering your price range

As others have mentioned, fit is very important and should not be overlooked.

Go out to your local club before you purchase and try out as many as you can. Most members are very friendly and will allow you to shoot their shotgun. It will help you decide what action/type of gun you prefer.

From there, check out the EE section of this forum, or look around at what the dealer's have to offer. You can often find a gun that is lightly used for a real bargain.

That being said some of the more popular choices that I have seen for getting into clays are:

870 (pump) as mentioned
Rem 1100 (semi-auto)
BPS (pump)

I am sure the others mentioned here would do you just fine. Remember, don't rush out and buy right away - try AS MANY as you can, and this will help you in your decision and save you money in the long run.

Good luck!

Looks like Maverick 88 is my cheapest option. Comes with a 28" vented/ported barrel and interchangeable chokes. Should do everything that I want (clays). Thanks guys!

BS Remingtons QC has been terrible ever since the 887 nitromag. I was looking at 2 rem 700 vtr's at the local gun shop and both were covered in surface rust. Both were brand new. They're 887,1187 sportsman and 597 are all a piece of ####.

....And where is he (or anyone) going to find a $400 BPS? I'd take a Rem 870 express for that money but a Browning is going to cost a lot more for a serviceable gun.

I would first like to say that I'm a Remington man.
Second I'd like to say that the 597,VTR,1187,887,700 ARE ####!
They sand blast the surface instead of polish it, these little pits trap moisture leading to rust, they donot adequately protect their barrels for shipping and the bores rust just sitting in the box waiting to be sold, I've seen dented stocks, scratched receivers, stripped sight mount screws, metal chips inside the action and bores, burrs on the rifleing/crown,dents on the crown, crooked sights, mis drilled holes, holes drilled but not tapped, gaps in the laminate wood stock material, missing bluing patches, rusted bluing.....shall I continue?
I went through 5 boxes before I bought my 870 express this spring.
All this being said for $400 or less a new 870 is hard to beat if you get the right one. A lot of manufacturers are putting out shoddy work these days with their standard guns. Remington is not the only one.
