Yesterday i finalize the adjustments on my 77-44, i did really handload a very accurate load for it, i am pretty sure by the recoil, it's gonna be a stumper, this will be the first time i hunt with it... Here a picture of how good that load group but the bolt action of Ruger is solid so it may have a lot to do with the accuracy, this is not the best group out of 30 rounds but one of the best, did not mesure every target but, i had one that must be sub 1.5... 1 to 5 of Dec, the deers on Anticosti island gonna be nervous and...deads... Cheers. JP.

Great little rifles, but I couldnt get mine to shoot any bullets heavier than 210gr.
225 and up shot terrible! 3-4" at 100. sometimes like the group above.
I got frustrated, and sold mine.

Waiting for the 77/357 now.

Good luck Caramel! If you can repeat that group, you got yourself a good shooter.

The paradise for Whitetail my wife and i 5 days american plan, great loodging, super food 4 deers, and whe let ourself being guided, kind of easy hunting... Cheers. JP.

Why do you think it shot so poorly with heavier bullets? It can't be the twist, can it?

I think its exactly the twist.

As the bullet weight drops, my groups shrink. And Its no effort to find a load that shoots inside1-1/2"-2", with bullet weights in the 180-210gr. Range.

Any load combo I had tried with the heavier weights(240+) never shot more than 1 good group. No repeatability.

It was a real shame! Because it was such a nice rifle!

Ah, I just checked the twist rate - it is 1:20. By way of comparison the Marlin 1894 has a twist rate of 1:38. Why on earth would the 77/44 have such a fast twist rate?

The fast twist is what make possible to stabilise heavier bullet, my 77-4 is at its best with a 270 gr but it do shoot 300 gr very good around 2.2 inch, it shoot all weight within 2.5 inch 200 gr Fiocchi are extra accurate under 2 inch but ,i like to have more weight for knockdown power... Cheers. JP.

I did find out by trial and error that OAL is very important, in the case of my best reload my OAL is 1,750 that 50 more than max, but any longer wont fit the mag, i am almost touching the lands, that were you get the accuracy ,i am pretty sure of that... JP.

1:20 just seems way too fast.

With my 77/44 it shoots Cast gas checked 310 gr bullets without any trouble at all.

Pretty good kick at 1650 fps and will hold 2 inch group at 100 yrds

Light bullets don't work in most 77/44s
