6-24x50 mil/mil FFP recommendations

Anyone have anything they recommend in the 6-24 (or something similar) mil/mil FFP - preferably in the 1k range. I realize this is a tight budget but want to get an idea for whats out there before I go to my general manager and explain how expensive glass is.

Scope is going on a Savage 110BA .338 LM

I would email Jerry at Mystic Precision. He really helped me out in making a proper scope selection for my precision varmint rifle. I was very pleased with his service.
 
Check out the Vortex Viper 6-24X50 PST FFP. I have the MOA version but it's also available in mil/mil and right in your price range at $1000.
 
Zimbu after chking out whats available thats the exact scope i'm ordering (hahah at least i think!). I also really looked at the sightron and the only real negative was no FFP.

Would really like to hear your thoughts on that scope!
 
I love this scope. I waited 10 long months for it to arrive but it was worth the wait. To be clear it's the Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50 MOA FFP that I'm talking about. I may not be the the best qualified to rate the quality of glass as I have not had opportunity to compare side by side with competing scopes, but I will offer a few thoughts.
First of all these observations were made by myself when I was wearing toric contact lenses. I have not yet had a chance for any real comparison since having my eyes lasered a couple months ago.

The clarity might diminish very, very slightly between 20X and 24X, but I think that has more to do with the mirage and impurities in the atmosphere being amplified than it does the glass. At any rate, I don't notice any reduction in sharpness at max power.

I shoot white painted gongs with my .223 at 750-1000yd. At 750 I am able to see the strike marks on the gong which are probably 5/8 to 7/8" dia.

The $230 Vortex Crossfire 6-24X50 AO MD on my hunting rifle is far, far sharper and brighter than the Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15X40 tactical MD it replaced. In turn, the Viper PST is easily four times the scope that the Crossfire is. I was able to read the 3/4" block white lettering on my neighbour's black garbage can 180yds away with the PST but not with the Crossfire. Sorry I can't offer a more meaningful comparison, but that's the best I can do at the moment. I will say that I have looked through Nightforce and IOR scopes costing twice as much, and I do not look through my PST and feel like I'm using something inferior. Quite the opposite.


The turrets have very smooth, solid, tactile clicks similar to the Razor. The FFP and EBR reticle is oh so sweet for holding into the wind. I went through a couple batteries from bumping the illumination switch on inadvertantly, until I learned to turn it to the off position between 1 and 2 so it doesn't drain so fast if I bump it on.

Hope that sheds some light the subject.

where did you get the Viper from? I'm looking as well and trying to determine who has them in stock. FFP isn't so important for my purposes but I'd certainly take it if I could.

i scored mine about 2 weeks ago from Grouse River. I would give them a try, as they are alledgedly one of the largest dealers in Canada.

OP a question. Why FFP and why mil?
Long range shooting requires that you actually see the target not have it covered by the reticle, which is very common occurence in FFP scopes. Also with the smallest incremental change in a mil scope being 3.66" at 1000 yards it is very hard to be precise in adjustments. MOA uses a smaller increment of adjustment at 2.5" at 1000 yards with a 1/4 MOA turrets or 1.25 " at 1000 yards with a scope having 1/8th MOA turrets.
IF the plan to range with the scope FFP has merit, but they will never be as accurate or fast as a laser range finder.
Just asking as I know you are fairly new to the LR game and figure you may want to think about this.:cheers:

Ditto. Grouse River placed one of the largest orders of the PST scopes to gain priority as they trickle in from Vortex. One Shot Tactical may also have one and are a site sponsor.

What Rick says is spot on. I also don`t know why there is such excitement for this Phillipino made scope. You can get a kick ass Japanese made Sightron for the same price. I guess it has the tacticool look people are going for these days? I`ve got one , so I guess I`m guilty of buying into the hype as well, but it`s on a rimfire and really not that great of a scope. I would describe it as a$300 scope with a $600 warranty.

couldnt disagree more...i have the 4-16x50 ffp in mil/mil and find it to be excellent value for the money. Decent quality glass, good turrets, lots o features....You must be looking at some pretty sweet $300 scopes ;)

Would you care to elaborate.... Not saying I disagree, just haven't heard many/any negative comments about the PST (or the Vipers in general) other than the initial run. I have a Viper 6.5-20x50 now and have no issues with it.

What other scopes would you suggest I look at prior to grabbing a PST?

Rick, you must be shooting some very small targets if you can't see them behind the reticle of this scope. Walnuts at a grand?

IF you shoot long range in the wind the FFP has merit. I never have to stop to think about what magnification my scope is at, multiply by 2X, 4X, and convert mil dots to MOA. A 2 MOA wind hold is a 2MOA wind hold at whatever magnification I choose to use. That is why I love the FFP.



OP, masonicshooter will sell you his for $300. If you don't buy it I will.:D

I would definitely check out the Sightron S3 LRMOA line in either an 8-32 or 6-24. Far superior scope to the pst. Mystic Precision and ATRS both sell Sightron, at least that's where I got mine.

If you wish to buy a pst, wait until wss has another sale. I bought mine there for 20% off this past summer.
