Sitting in my stand this morning a group of does came by. I picked the largest one and let her have it. She dropped, got back up and ran straight into the swamp, long reeds and mush.

Had the fellas go to camp and get the most unstable canoe known to man. Was going to try and paddle out to her and loop the ATV winch to her and wind her back in.

Well 1/2 there I rolled the canoe trying to get through the reeds. WoW was the water ever cold (and stinky)

Since I was wet already I swam out in the slop and looped her and we winched her in.

I should add, I pulled the trigger at 9:37 and we didn't have her and the canoe out of the water and gutted till 11:45
 
............and then on my way back to camp my Arctic Cat started to go weird on me stopping,going,bogging down!I looked back just in time to see the back legs of my doe going over the back of the Cat!Just then everything came to a squishy halt!I gets off the bike and look under the rear and theres "the doe from hell"wrapped at least twice around the rear suspension.Oh sh!t I forgot to tie the head back! Well anyhow I...................* And that my friend is how a day like that should have ended.....I still cant stop laughing! Nice Doe,Congrats.
 
Hey! I have a twin to that canoe ... I swear by all things Holy that it would be easier, and probably make more sense, to just start with it upside down and me straddling it Laugh2

Ruger .44 Carbine with handloads. Hornady XTP 240gr with 23.8gr of H110 1760fps. Bullet went thru and thru never recovered the bullet. She was ~85yds away.

Was a lung shot, and she bled like a stuck pig but had enough left in her to make it 30 yards out into the swamp before she died.
 
Cool story and pics. Here is the question I have. If the canoe is that unstable wouldn't it be better to bring along a pair of good waders to the camp just in case? They have to beat a cold swim in plain clothes in November and it would probably be much less work to carry a set of waders on the back of the bike than retrieve the deer and the canoe as well........LOL! Seems like that canoe would be best put in a yard sale!:D
Congrats on getting your deer retrieved though, glad you didn't lose her! Good stuff!
 
The canoe was a found canoe (strangely enough, in the very same creek/swamp about 3km downstream, just outside of my property) now I know why its previous owner left it. We've never had a deer go in the water before so we never had the need for waders. Now I know for next year!

Regardless, a good time was had by all, a good laugh from the 4 guys on shore and a great beer when I got back to camp! One for the books.
