Anyone make a rifled slug mold? I would like to try and make some for my smooth bore. I've got buckshot etc down pat, but think being able to make slugs would make me a "complete" reloader for my shotguns.

interesting, I have only seen the lee molds for non-rifled slugs, but they are only good for smoothbore or rifled barrel.

I would like to cast rifled slugs so I can shoot them through mod/full chokes

The Foster type slugs can be shot through any choke. Not sure about the Lee key type slug? Lyman makes foster and a Sabot style.............Harold .......bilozir.net carries molds ,data and pre-made slugs

the lee slug is a smooth foster style, no rifling, intended for rifled barrels, and therefore likely cannot safely squeeze through a choke.

I am looking for a foster style with rifling, that will allow it to compress through a choke safely.

Go on castboolits.com under shotgun loading lots of knowledgeable people there....Harold.........a .690 RB is also accurate at close range

The one that looks like a large pellet gun pellet is a sabot, and the round nose one is a Foster.
My lyman shotgun reloading manual says that the sabots get roll crimped and the fosters get set inside a 1 oz shot cup and crimped like buckshot.
I see these smooth slug molds, but I want to find a rifled slug mold... you know like the factory ones?

I know what you mean, I want one too, just doesnt seem like anyone makes this particular mold...

here is my reloading setup for the lee 1 oz slugs:

Rem gun club hulls (1F from 7.5 shot target loads)
WAA 12SL wad,
34 gr HS6
CCI primers

If you just plan to shoot them in your smooth bore, there are no problems with the lee slug, I shot these through my 18" smooth bore 870

Can you give me tips for buckshot reloading????

perfect, I was hoping someone like you could chime in on this. How are they for accuracy? 50 yards ok?
And may I ask where you are getting your hulls from? I can only find once fired.

^^ I updated the above post with info on components. I have hit the gong consistently at 60 yards at the range, but have not had the chance to shoot paper at that distance yet to measure the groups.

at 25 yards (to sight the red dot in) the 5 shots were touching, but 25 yards is not a very long distance

No one makes a rifled slug mold. The lee ones are designed to fit inside a shot cup and to be able to pass through a full choke if needed. The Lyman ones are the same way.

The reason there isn't a rifled slug mold is because they need to be swaged due to complexity of the design and not being able to use a 2 or 3 part mold to accomplish this. I was trying to come up with a better slug design that could be done in a 2 part mold but kind of hit a road block with finding someone to make the mold design as most/all bullet mold manufacturers use CNC lathing rather than a CNC mill. Lee has mills but they didn't want to make the design.

so you're saying that it is safe to shoot the lee slugs through a full choke?? I tried putting them through the full choke with and without the wad, it would not fit through

I said if needed. It's been a while since I looked at the numbers but I believe that the lee mold was .675 or .680 and a full choke is .670. Cylinder bore is .730.

To prevent liability it won't explode your gun but I still wouldn't be shooting them often or intentionally out of a full choke with anything but pure lead. The Lyman wadcutter slug is probably the best bet since it only has two points to swage down on the full choke. If you're casting wheel weights it might be a bit hard on you're gun as they can get significantly harder than pure lead depending on how the alloy turns out. So check the hardness of your cast slugs.

As a safety measure check what your actual choke diameter and slug diameters are. Each mold is a bit different in the size it drops between machining and alloy.

Over on castboolits there was a guy who was selling an old lyman/ideal mold that cast a smooth sided slug, and then swaged the 'rifling' into the side of it. He had the whole kit. If memory serves, he was selling it on e-bay.

It was in the shotgun reloading section. I was looking at it last night.

Also a guy on Castboolits, from Africa who was making slugs using socket wrench sockets, as his molds. Slugs are a controlled device where He is, but He still wants them for protection, and He is able to get trap loads, so he casts the lead in the socket, puts it back in the wad, the glues the whole works shut. I wouldn't recommend it, except in life or death, but that's where this guy is, so it works, and fairly well, within reasonable limits.
