So I am still on the hunt for an affordable hunting rifle/ scope combo. So far, I have narrowed it down to the Remington 700 SPS DM, Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic and Savage 111 FXP3. Caliber is either going to be 30-06 or 300 mag.

Im sure this topic has been beaten to death, but since these guns are all close to the same pice league ( 500-650$), what would be the way to go?

One thing I don't like about the vanguard is the bolt can be opened while it is on safe. Not a huge deal, just not my preference. Not sure about the others. I think they changed it on the vanguard 2.

the new S2 vanguard is just coming out now, synthetic stock has a much better feel than the plastickey feel of other synthetics, 3 position safety if it means anything to you, awesome two stage trigger, and a subMOA guarantee! In my opinion, the others in this price range don't compare. Plus with the new S2 coming out, it should drive down the prices of the earlier Vanguards (if you're good with the 2 position safety , 1.5MOA guarantee-although no guarantee whatsoever on the others IIRC- and a bit stiffer trigger). Plus you can get a detachable mag in 30-06. I wasn't a fan of the Vanguard until I started looking and handling them and others. The S2 will be my next rifle for sure.

Toss a coin. The savage will have the best trigger, so it would probably be my choice.

Actually, if it were me, I'd find something used. Probably stainless/synthetic. Quite possibly a 'canoe paddle' ruger, or a Browning A-Bolt stainless/synthetic. Both fit me well, are comfortable, and robust. Don't need to baby either of them out in the bush

I love my SPS DM.... but just a suggestion.... get one of teh three as they all have good reviews... but don't get the scope package... get something a bit better than they offer... I bought a Redfield Revolution.... 200 bucks and it is awesome...

Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic and Savage 111 FXP3

I've owned that Savage and a few others. I think I'm done with them.

They were pretty poor in most areas except accuracy.

The Vanguard has superior finish, features, and the accuracy is guaranteed sub MOA too. (get the S2). The trigger is also superior to the non-acutrigger savage you're looking at.

I have two Vanguards.

The Bluing is superior to anything savage makes and the stock is 20x better. Bolt is smoother too.

The bases are far too far apart on that savage too.

The stainless finish in Vanguards is great too.

vanguard is not guaranteed sub moa.... they bench test every rifle and the ones that are sub moa are sold for extra $..... you are using this to hunt so is that extra inch at 200 yards that important?.... not nocking the rifle.... they include a target with each one that has been shot at.... cool... but it is a novelty

All new S2 vanguards are sub moa guarante.

To the OP, get the vanguard s2.
